Charles Marshall, arrived near the present site of Wheeler in 1869 and 
settled on his "island" which he bought of Jim Somers. Marshall came 
from Kentucky originally, but had been steamboating for a good many 
years before his arrival, principally in Louisiana. He engaged in the 
wood business on his "island" for a long while. Marshall has remained on 
the island since his arrival, securing title to the land in 1876. His 
wife was a Sioux.
