Peter Martin came into this part of the state at the close of the Mexican War and engaged in the fur trade and wood business. His wife was a Sioux. Martin was a Mexican, but claimed to be a Spaniard, who wandered up and down the river. He lived on land in sections 10 and 15- 96-67, to which he acquired title in the seventies, and sold it March 13, 1878 to William Miller. This land transfer is the first one recorded (Jan. 29, 1880) in the county.
