A man by the name of Russell lived on Hamilton or Russell island a good many years. He had filed on the land there but the channel of the river changed so that the island was construed by the authorities as not belonging to Charles Mix county and he failed to secure title. Mr. J. L. Walker in speaking of Russell says that he was a well educated man, very profane, was said to have been a preacher at one time, and an intense woman hater, but was said to have had a wife and son somewhere. He was a genius in his way. He lived there alone until one day in 1883 or 1884 he was found on his island very sick. He was hauled over the ice on a sled to Pierre Peliscien's place but died on the way. They buried him on the hillside where Peliscien was later buried by his side.
