James Leroy Walker came into the county in 1878 as stage driver for the Wyoming Stage Company. He moved his family to a place near his present home in 1880, and broke a part of his claim that same year but did not file on the land until 1881, when he also moved his family onto his homestead. Mr. Walker was a New Yorker, and had lived a year or two at Vermillion in the early 70's and later at Yankton. He continued in the stage business until about 1884, "driving stage by day and farming by night." He has lived on the same farm in section 30 southwest of Platte ever since. Mr. Walker is one of the old timers whose recollections of early events is very clear and exact. He relates many amusing incidents of those early free and easy times.
