Wheeler arrived about 1863 and established a road house or stage station at White Swan where he married his Yankton wife. A little later he settled on the land where he still resides four miles east of Wheeler. He is one of the 19 settlers whom the government tried to eject from the Military reservation, but he held onto his land and later secured title. Wheeler was one of the county officers under the Lamonte organization, the first probate judge for several terms under the permanent organization and a member of the legislature in 1873.
