MATHEWS, George Arthur, a Delegate from the Territory of Dakota; born 
in Potsdam, St. Lawrence County, N. Y., June 4, 1852; attended the 
common schools, Upper Iowa University, Fayette, Iowa, in 1874, and the 
law department of the of the University of Iowa at Iowa City in 1878; 
was admitted to the bar in 1878 and commenced practice in Corning, 
Iowa; moved to Brookings, Dakota Territory (now South Dakota), in 1879 
and continued the practice of law; prosecuting attorney of the fifth 
judicial circuit for the Territory of Dakota in 1884; member of the 
Territorial council and served as its president in 1887; elected as a 
Republican a Delegate to the Fifty-first Congress and served from March 
4, 1889, to November 2, 1889, when the Territory was admitted into the 
Union as the States of North Dakota and South Dakota; mayor of the city 
of Brookings, S. Dak., 1897-1903; resumed the practice of law at 
Brookings, S. Dak.; retired from active practice and moved to Los 
Angeles, Calif., in 1910, where he died on April 19, 1941; the remains 
were cremated and deposited in Greenwood Cemetery, Brookings, S. Dak.
