REILLY, of Orient, Faulk county, was born in Allamakee county, Iowa, on the 14th of April, 1859, and was reared on the old homestead which was the place of his birth, and his educational training was received in the excellent public schools of Iowa. He continued thereafter to be associated with his father until 1881, when he came to South Dakota and took up a timber claim in Clark county. In the fall of that year he returned to his old home, and in the spring of the following year he came once more to South Dakota, with whose advantages and resources he had became greatly impressed. At this time he took up squatter's claim in Faulk county, and retained the same after the government survey was made, ultimately perfecting his title to the property, the claim lying four miles northwest of Orient. He continued to be actively and successfully engaged in farming and stock raising until December, 1902, when he disposed of the property and removed to Orient, where he has since been established in the general merchandise business. In 1890 he was elected a member of the board of county commissioners, while for eight years he held the office of assessor of his township, and has been a member of the board of supervisors. Mr. Reilly was married to Miss Jane E. Hand, and of this union have been born seven daughters.
