Fred Evander, born Skone,Sweden, son of immigrant Martin Evander, homesteader of Eagle Lake, Minnesota, homesteaded in Roberts County at the opening of the Sisseton and Whapeton Indian lands, where he farmed for 40 yrs. He was active in the building of highways and the extension of the railroad into new territory; he was a member of the 1917 legislature and served in the senate in 1933. He was the author of several S.D. laws. Fred returned to Eagle Lake, to his father's homestead and for 24 years ran the Roma Lodge. He died in 1957 at age 87 and is buried in the Evander Cemetery at Eagle Lake. He was one of seven children born to Martin. Fred was the father of seven children as well. His oldest, Daniel Logan Evander is the grandfather of my son, Daniel Kirby Evander.
