When success attends a man in a vocation in which he has not previously engaged it evidences his business capabilities, his determination, and his strength of character. The subject of this review has made a success of farming and stock raising on section two, in Greenleaf township, near the town of Miller South Dakota. He is one of the pioneer settlers of Hand county, and previous to his locating in Dakota had engaged in other pursuits. This, coupled with the fact that he had no means, and came to this country when reverses met the settler on every hand, makes his success the more remarkable. Mr. Cree was born in Clearfield county, Pennsylvania, July 21, 1859, the son of William Cree, whose personal history appears elsewhere in this volume. He received his education in his native state, and in Iowa, where he removed with his parents in 1869, settling in Jasper county, and later going with them to Davis county, where he learned the trade of carriage maker. He followed his trade in Kansas City and Ottumwa, Iowa, and afterward established a shop at Bloomfield, Iowa, remaining there until he located in Dakota in 1883. He took a claim south of his present location, in Ree Hills, and followed his trade in Miller until 1887, when he went to his present location, and engaged in the stock business. He has a half section of land on Wolf Creek, and handles about one hundred and fifty head of stock annually. He has a comfortable dwelling and is considered one of the well to-do agriculturists of Hand county. Our subject was married in 1897 to Miss Maggie Crawley, a native of Tennessee. Mr. and Mrs. Cree are the parents of one child, Olive F. Mr. Cree is a member of the Knights of Pythias. He has served in various local offices and takes an active part in the advance of his township. In political views he is a Republican.
