DEAN is the proprietor and manager of the "Daily Republican" and the "Weekly Capital," The Mitchell Printing Company, and is making his home and place of business in Mitchell, Davison county. Mr. Dean has been connected with the newspaper business for several years and has ably conducted the various departments of the enterprise and has built up for himself an excellent reputation as a publisher and an extensive circulation for each of his newspapers. Our subject was born in Dubuque county, Iowa, March 28, 1854, and was reared on a farm in that county. He received his education at Lenox College, at Hopkinton, Iowa, and graduated from this institution in 1878. From that date he began teaching school and followed that vocation until he moved to South Dakota in 1882. For three years he was principal of the public school at Strawberry Point, in Clayton county. In 1882 he went to Davison county, South Dakota, and located on a farm on section 7, Lisbon township, where he remained one year, and in 1883 he took a homestead claim on section 26, Tobin township, of the same county. Soon after this he entered into partnership with his brother- in-law, R M. Ewart, and purchased the Mitchell "Capital," one of the leading weekly newspapers of Mitchell. In 1886 Mr. Ewart died, and Mr. R. W. Wheelock purchased his interest, and the paper was jointly owned by this gentleman and the subject of our sketch until the following year, when they consolidated with the "Daily Republican." Soon after Mr. Dean and his partner purchased the interests of the former owners of the "Republican," and, in 1894, Mr. Dean and his brother, C. C. Dean, bought Mr. Wheelock's interest in the business and since that time they have been the sole owners and managers. In October, 1893, Mr. Dean was united in marriage to Miss Mary Haynes, a native of Wisconsin, and a daughter of James Haynes, now of Mt. Vernon, Dawson county, South Dakota. Socially he affiliates with the Knights of Pythias and the Modern Woodmen of America. Mr. Dean's father, Sylvester Dean, was a native of Ohio, and moved from thence to Iowa in about 1833, when the latter was yet a territory, and located in Dubuque county. He died in Davison county, South Dakota, in 1892. Our subject's mother bore the maiden name of Catharine Lathrop. Her birth place is New York, where she also grew to maturity, but she is now making her home in Mitchell.
