His parents, Frederick and Elizabeth (Hohisel) Deeg, are both natives of Germany. In the fall of 1882, they came to Beadle county, South Dakota, and located on the southwest quarter of section 6, Liberty township, where they still reside, honored and respected by the entire community. Our subject remained with his parents until his twenty-third year, but in the mean time had filed a claim on the southeast quarter of section 26, Iowa township, this being in 1886. As his parents were poor and had a large family to support, it was impossible to give their children more than a common-school education, but fortunately, they were taught lessons of industry and economy. Through his own well-directed efforts, our subject has acquired three additional quarter-sections of land, and has met with marked success as a general farmer and stock raiser, keeping a herd of more than fifty cattle, and also fifteen horses which he uses in the operation of his land. He has followed threshing for thirteen falls, but believing that he has made little more than wages at that occupation, he now intends to devote his entire time to his other business. On the 24th of March, 1892, Mr. Deeg was united in marriage with Miss Sarah Hatfield, who was born in Iowa, June 29, 1873, a daughter of J. C. and Elizabeth (Sanders) Hatfield, and they now have two children, Neta H. and Averil. Mr. Deeg is a supporter of the men and measures of the Republican party, but not a politician in the sense of office seeking. He may be classed as a jolly, good natured and successful farmer who makes friends easily and as easily retains them, for he is popular with all classes, and is justly deserving the high regard in which he is held.
