GAREY is one of Mount Vernon's ablest and most popular business men. Attention, method and industry are the foundation stones of success in business, and these combined with integrity of word and deed have been the corner stone of all his business transactions, and during his residence in Mount Vernon he has made many warm friends throughout the county and city. Mr. Garey was one of the early settlers of the community, and was one of the prime instigators in the establishment of many of the local industries. Having them once established, he has proved himself a competent pilot for every business venture with which he has been connected, and to him has been left the management of many of Mount Vernon's business enterprises. He is the cashier of the Davison County Bank of Mount Vernon,! president of the Mount Vernon Milling Corporation, president of the Mount Vernon Merchandise Company and president of the Mount Vernon Co-operative Creamery Association. The subject of our sketch was the eldest child and only son of a family of four, and first opened his eyes to the light of day on a farm in Oswego county, New York, December 6, 1859. His parents, J. W. and Susanna (Thomas) Garey, were also both natives of New York state, and are now making their home in Woodbury county, Iowa. At the age of twenty-two years our subject began the study of telegraphy at Janesville, Wisconsin, and followed that line of work for three years. In 1884 he was employed as bookkeeper in the Coleridge Bank, at Coleridge, Nebraska. Four years later he came to South Dakota, located at once in Mount Vernon, and in partnership with J. F. Reynolds he opened a private bank which, in 1891, was incorporated as a state bank and has since been conducted as such. He has since aided, and, in fact, has been a potent factor in the establishment of several other business enterprises in the village, and, as has been previously stated, the management of several of them has been left to him. Politically he is a Republican, and socially he affiliates with the Masonic fraternity at Mitchell, and also the Ancient Order of United Workmen. The estimable lady who presides over the household affairs of Mr. Garey bore the maiden name of Miss Mary Samuels. She is a native of Wales, and was born in 1869, the daughter of John and Sarah Samuels.
