The financial and commercial history of South Dakota would be very incomplete and unsatisfactory without a personal and somewhat extended mention of those whose lives are interwoven so closely with the business and financial development of the state. Prominent among the energetic, enterprising and successful business men of Hyde county is J. L. Greene, the well-known president of the First State Bank of Highmore. He is a native of Ohio, but in early life removed with his family to Rock county, Wisconsin, where he was reared upon a farm. Subsequently he was engaged in business in Marshalltown, Iowa, for many years, and in 1882 came to Pierre, South Dakota, where he purchased property. Six years later he became a resident- of Highmore, where he has since made his home, and has been connected with the bank of which he is now president. That institution was organized in 1883 under the name of the Hyde County Bank, with A. H. Everhard as president and O. P. Everhard as cashier. In 1888 Mr. Greene became interested in the same. It was conducted as a private bank until September, 1891, when it was re- organized and made a state bank, A. H. Everhard being chosen president and our subject cashier. In January, 1898, J. L. Greene was elected president and F. D. Greene, cashier, in which capacity they are still serving. They do a general banking business, and the bank is regarded as one of the most reliable financial institutions of this section of the state. In Iowa Mr. Greene was united in marriage with Miss Eva Duguid, who died in 1883, leaving one son and two daughters, and four years later he wedded her sister, Miss Mary Duguid. He has never taken any interest in political affairs, preferring to give his undivided attention to his business interests. As a financier he ranks among the ablest, and has been an earnest and constructive force in administering the affairs of the strong institution of which he is the head and over whose destinies he presides.
