HENEGAR, who is engaged in general farming near Chamberlain City, in Brule county, South Dakota, is a native of Tennessee, having been born in the eastern part of that state in 1823, of Irish-Scotch parentage. From early childhood he had a home with his grandfather, who lived in West Virginia, and afterward in Illinois, where they located when our subject was about thirteen years of age. Here he followed the life of a farmer boy of those days, working hard and having few educational advantages, and upon reaching his majority, he left the farm, against the wishes of his relatives, and went to work in the Wisconsin lead mines. He located upon his present farm in Red Lake township in 1883, where he built an eighteen-by-forty-three-foot sod shanty, and which served as a home for many years. Our subject is at present engaged in mixed farming, keeps from twenty-five to thirty head of cattle, and is a patron of the creamery. In 1856 Mr. Henegar was married to Sylvina C. Cannon, who was born in Illinois in 1833, and is of Irish-German descent. Mr. and Mrs. Henegar are the parents of fifteen children, all of whom are living, and many have held prominent positions in the county, among them Lee L., who is at present county auditor, and whose life's review appears elsewhere in this volume. Mr. Henegar is in political views a Democrat, and is a respected citizen, who is well versed on the topics of the day.
