Perhaps no other man in McCook county is so well known for his intelligence, active public spirit and thorough appreciation of the wants of his locality as the gentleman whose name heads this article. He is an enterprising and progressive business man and farmer, making his home and base of operations at the village of Spencer, where he has always identified himself with matters which pertain to the improvement and upbuilding of the better interests of the locality. Nor has his active participation in public affairs been confined to matters pertaining to his own township and county, but he has thoroughly acquainted himself and been associated with all matters pertaining to the welfare of the state. Being a man of excellent business qualifications and a character of the highest order, he has been called upon by his fellow-citizens from time to time to fill offices of trust, and in 1898 they manifested their appreciation of his worth by electing him to a seat in the state senate. Mr. Hoese, the subject of our sketch, is of German descent, and a native of Plymouth county, Iowa, born in 1868. He is the youngest of a family of four children born to William and Henrietta (Bands) Hoese. The parents were both born and reared near Berlin, Germany, were there married and there two of their children were born. In Plymouth county, Iowa, the father operated a mill, but devoted the most of his time to farming, and to the latter vocation our subject was reared. The father died August 27, 1892, and the mother May 10 of the same year. Our subject completed his education in the Northwestern Business College at Sioux City, Iowa, and in 1885 he went to Bridgewater, South Dakota, and opened a hardware business, which he conducted three years. He then returned to Sioux City and secured a position as bookkeeper. From there he went to-Sioux Center, Sioux county, Iowa, and developed a banking business,—the pioneer bank of Sioux county,—but sold the same a year later. In August, 1890, he established his present business, and incorporated the same as a state bank during the following year. In 1892 he erected a fine jasper granite building, with residence back and above. The material in this building is native product, quarried about half a mile from Spencer. In connection with his banking business Mr. Hoese operates nine farms, and within the past two years he has stocked three dairy farms, and intends to soon introduce a good dairy stock. Politic ally he is a Republican and voices high license and anti- suffrage. He is chairman of the board of trustees of the village of Spencer, and in the fall of 1898 he was elected on the Republican ticket to the office of state senator, defeating a very strong candidate. Socially he affiliates with the Masonic fraternity (chapter and commandery), the Ancient Order of United Workmen and the Modern Woodmen of America. His family are members of the German Lutheran church. September 2, 1895, Mr. Hoese was united in marriage to Miss Ida T. Janke, a native of the state of Wisconsin. Her parents, who were Germans, were pioneers of Minnehaha county. To this union has been born one son, William R., and one daughter, Clara T.
