LANPHIER was born November 16, 1861, in Herkimer county, New York. He was employed in cheese making with his father up to the time of their coming to Spink county, South Dakota, and he remained with his parents until his marriage in 1889. In 1890 he went to Chicago and was employed as conductor on a street car line for several years. He returned to Dakota, however, and in 1896 purchased the land upon which the buildings now stand. He is conducting general farming on an extensive scale. He keeps about thirty milch cows, making butter for the markets in the winter, and patronizing the cheese factory in the summer months. He cultivates about three hundred acres in crops each year, employing one man the year round, and two during the busy season. He has extended his interests by leasing a section of school lands and fencing it for pasture. He is still a young man, and is wide awake to the needs of his community and county. He is a Republican and prohibitionist and favors equal suffrage. He is active in local political affairs, and has been selected to serve in various public capacities. He has been a member of the township board, assessor and served four years as school clerk. He is a thorough business man, sociable, affable and public spirited and has a host of friends.
