MEDBERY, sheriff of Beadle county, South Dakota, and also proprietor of a fine stock farm near the city of Huron, is a native of McKean county, Pennsylvania, and was born July 5, 1865. He is the only child born to William C. and Ophelia C. (Fitch) Medbery, both residents of Beadle county, where they located in the pioneer days, and took land in Liberty township in 1880, the first to enter a claim in that township. The family was established in a shanty of small dimensions, but built of lumber, which they hauled overland from Volga. They introduced grain farming, and afterward engaged also in stock raising, and are now introducing the Durham breed. They have five hundred and sixty acres, three hundred and fifty of which is under plow. The farm is nicely located on Shue creek, where water is abundant. They keep about one hundred head of stock, and twenty-five milch cows, and patronize the Cavour creamery. A cheese factory has also been constructed near the home. They have a good story, and-a-half dwelling, and are surrounded by many conveniences not usually found in rural homes. They have extensive barn and shed room, with accommodations for fifty head of stock and seventy-five tons of hay. Mr. Medbery was married in 1889 to Miss Mary L Teets. Their home has been blessed by the birth of one daughter, Ethlyn, who is now aged five years. Mr. Medbery has been associated with the county from its pioneer days and has given his time and influence for the uplifting of his locality, where he is well and favorably known. In the fall of 1896 he was elected sheriff of Beadle county, and is now serving his second term in that capacity, commendably performing the duties entrusted to him. He is a fusionist. He is prominent in secret society circles, and holds membership in the Masonic fraternity, the Knights of Pythias, the Modern Woodmen of America, the Elks, the Eastern Star, and the Royal Neighbors.
