One cannot examine far into the history of the development and progress of Hand county without learning how inseparably interwoven with the annals is the name of Miller. The county seat now bears the family name of its founder, Henry Miller, the honored father of our subject, with whom Eudell was prominently associated in the conduct of the various enterprises and business interests which have so materially contributed to welfare and prosperity of the county. He is now accounted one of the most energetic, capable and successful business men of Miller, and his record is one which has gained for him the respect of all who have regard for fidelity and uprightness in commercial circles. Mr. Miller is a native of Iowa, his birth having occurred in Cedar county, June 15, 1859. He was reared in Benton county, that state, and attended the common schools and the Blairstown Academy, acquiring a good education that well fitted him for life's practical duties. He was reared on the farm and followed agricultural pursuits until 1879, after which he conducted a furniture store in Audubon, Iowa, for two years. He then came with his father to South Dakota to select a location for the establishment of a colony and made choice of the present site of Miller and the surrounding district. Thirty-six claims were taken by this colony and this formed the nucleus of the enterprising little city which has since become the county seat of Hand county. Mr. Miller was his father's associate in the establishment and conduct of many of the enterprises which have been so potent in the upbuilding of Miller. He edited the "Hand County Press" in association with his brother, William H., deceased, for some years and edited the "Daily Press" during the county-seat contest, the only daily paper in the county. He is now conducting a feed business in Miller and deals in real estate. For some years he engaged in merchandising in connection with his brother, W. H. Miller, and they also handled part of the town site property. On the 28th of December, 1882,Eudell J. Miller was united in marriage to Miss Annie E. Humphrey, a native of Iowa, and they now have two interesting children: Bessie E. and Earl H. The parents are leading and faithful members of the Presbyterian church and Mr. Miller belongs to the Modern Woodmen of America. He was elected city justice of Miller in 1 899. He has filled a number of the town offices, yet has never been a politician in the sense of office seeking, preferring to devote his time and energies to his business interests, which, as the result of his diligence, careful management and keen discrimination, are bringing to him gratifying success. In manner he is genial, courteous and kindly and commands the respect and enjoys the warm friendship of many of Hand county's best citizens.
