Among those who have brought to the South Dakota bar a fund of legal learning and practical experience, none is more deserving of mention than the subject of this article. He is now also largely engaged in real estate in Chamberlain, Brule county. Charles C. Morrow is a native of Sussex county, New Jersey, born October 28, 1838, and was the eldest of nine children born to Samuel and Janette (Knox) Morrow. He received an academic education, and engaged in teaching for about twelve years, during which time he served a term as county superintendent of schools. He then took up-the study of law, and was admitted to the bar in Brooklyn, New York, where he began the practice of his profession. In 1881 our subject located in Chamberlain, South Dakota, and opened a lawoffice, and at the present enjoys the distinction of being the oldest resident attorney of the city. On locating here he filed a claim to a quarter-section of land adjoining the town site, and took up his residence thereon, and for the next six years he looked after his claim and practiced in the village. He succeeded in building up a valuable practice, and is one of the most widely and favorably known men of the county. Mr. Morrow was married to Miss Sarah Westbrook in 1859, and to this union three children were born, named as follows: Etta J. (deceased), Mamie (deceased) and Janette K. Miss Janette K. Morrow was born in the state of New York, and received an excellent education, graduating from All Saints' School, Sioux Falls, having previously spent two years at Belvidere Academy, New Jersey. She was elected superintendent of schools of Brule county in 1896, and re-elected in 1898, and is now performing the duties of that responsible position with marked ability and is doing much for the advancement of learning in the county of which she has charge. Mr. Morrow is a Populist in political views, favors high license and is an anti suffragist. He has always taken a prominent part in political matters in his community, and was elected to the office of county judge, which position he filled with great ability.
