He is the youngest child of a family of five born to Joseph and Anna (Kovarik) Nepodal. His father died when our subject was but four years of age. His mother is probably living, but her son has not heard from her since her return to her native country in 1896, after having spent about twelve years in America. Upon the completion of his education at the age of fourteen, our subject was apprenticed to the trade of carpenter, and after serving two years, applied himself to that calling until eighteen years of age, when he applied for transportation to America. Failing to secure this he made his way to Bremen, where he was smuggled aboard a vessel and landed in New York. He proceeded to Adams county, Wisconsin, and worked on a farm and also at his trade. For three years he worked in the pineries in the winter and the sawmills in the summer. June 28, 1884, he removed to Dakota in search of government land and purchased a relinquishment to a farm in Highland township, and in 1895 added the land upon which he now resides to his possessions. His farm lies partly in Pleasant Grove and partly in Eagle townships, and he has one hundred and twenty acres under cultivation, and one hundred and twenty acres in pasture. Our subject was married in 1886, to Miss Katie Kott, daughter of Vensil and Mary (Hrubes) Kott, who are pioneer settlers of Brule county, and reside in Eagle township. Mr. and Mrs. Nepodal have been the parents of five children, upon whom they have bestowed the names of Mary, Jennie, Victor, Katie and Joseph. Since coming to America our subject has become conversant with the language of his adopted country, and is a well read, representative citizen of Brule county, and has held many public offices, which he has filled in a creditable manner. He has been assessor, township treasurer, and a member of the township board for two terms, and in the election in 1898 was chosen county commissioner of the third district. He assisted in-organizing the Bohemian Farmers' Mutual Fire and Lightning Insurance Company, is one of the directors and is serving as secretary. In political sentiment he is a Populist, favors high license, and opposes equal suffrage. He is a member of the Presbyterian church.
