SCHERMERHORN, the popular agent of the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad Company at Ree Heights, is one of the best qualified business men of Hand county. He was born in Schoharie county, New York, July 30, 1860. His parents, William H. and Hannah (Dingman) Schermerhorn, were natives of New York, and the father was a harness and shoemaker. They resided in their native state until their death. Our subject received his education in his native state and then went to Michigan, and in Litchfield, Hillsdale county, took up the study of medicine. He removed to Janesville, Wisconsin, and later to Bloom, Ford county, Kansas, where he was engaged in the real-estate and loan business for three years. He entered the employ of the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific Railroad Company, in 1891, as agent and operator, at Bloom, which office he filled for one year, and then removed to Haviland, and from there went to Miller, South Dakota. He entered the employ of the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad Company, and was their agent at Herald for one year, and in 1894 entered upon his present duties. Mr. Schermerhorn was married in 1890 to Della Thomas, the daughter of George W. and Anna Thomas. Her parents were pioneer settlers of Hand county, and located there in 1883. Her father's death occurred in Hand county, in 1897. Since his residence in Ree Heights our subject has become well known in the community, and enjoys the respect of all. He is a stanch Republican, but does not take an active part in politics.
