SHOBER, the present county auditor of Hyde county, South Dakota, is one of the leaders of the Republican party in his section, his large acquaintance and unbounded popularity giving him an influential following, while his shrewd judgment of men and affairs make his counsel of value in all important movements. He was born in Tipton, Iowa, December 24, 1859, and is a son of John A. and Mary (McLeod) Shober, natives of Pennsylvania and Ohio respectively. The father was a carpenter by trade, but devoted his last years to mercantile pursuits. In 1854 he removed to Tipton, Iowa, and died near that place in 1865. The mother's death occurred in 1860. Our subject was the only son born to this worthy couple. He was reared on a farm in his native state, and after completing his education he engaged in teaching there for a time. Coming to Hyde county, South Dakota, in 1882, he settled in Highmore and took up land, which, however, he soon disposed of. In 1885 he founded the Hyde County Bulletin," which he still owns and manages in connection with his official duties. He is also interested to some extent in the stock business. Mr. Shober was married in 1894, the lady of his choice being Miss Alice Shuey, also a native of Iowa, and to them has been born a daughter, Miriam. In his social relations, Mr. Shober is a member of the Masonic fraternity and the Ancient Order of United Workmen. Since attaining his majority he has been an ardent supporter of the men and measures of the Republican party; he has been chairman of the county Republican central committee and also a member of the state central committee. He served as county commissioner of Hyde county during the year 1895, and the following year was elected county auditor. So creditably and acceptably did he fill the latter office, that he was reelected in 1898 without opposition and is the present incumbent. He is widely and favorably known and has a host of warm personal friends throughout his section of the state.
