TINAN is one of the best known newspaper men of South Dakota. and his journal, the "Kimball Graphic," published at Kimball is one of the most widely quoted newspapers of this section of the country. He was born upon the Ohio Western Reserve, in 1853, and was reared and educated in Painesville, his early life being passed in that city and Cleveland. After his graduation from the schools, he was especially fitted for a business career, but his strong literary instincts rebelled at such a course, and before he had hardly attained his majority he had gained an enviable reputation as a special contributor to the "American Field" and "Forest and Stream," and other periodicals devoted to field sports, a pastime to which he was devotedly attached. Coming to Kimball, South Dakota, in 1883, on a hunting trip, Mr. Tinan was induced to take charge of the struggling weekly called the "Kimball Enterprise." He changed the name to the "Kimball Graphic," and at once began a newspaper career which for successful endeavors has few equals in the west. From a modest beginning the "Graphic" has steadily advanced until it now has a finely equipped office and secured a competency for itself and owner. Mr. Tinan now owns one of the most beautiful residences in the city, luxuriously furnished, where he spends his leisure hours, enjoying the society of his family and friends in the midst of all the comforts that go to make life worth the living. He is devotedly attached to his profession and has been for years a member of the executive committee of the National Editorial Association. He is a pronounced Democrat in politics, but has never sought nor desired public office, preferring to give his undivided attention to journalistic work, for which he has proved himself so ably fitted. Mr. Tinan married Miss Adda Argus, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Argus, Shenandoah, Iowa, and has one child, a son, Percy W. Tinan, a student at Cornell.
