TREDWAY is a leading representative of the business interests of Huron, South Dakota, where he extensively engaged in stock dealing and also conducts a livery stable. Of excellent business ability and broad resources, he has attained a prominent place among the substantial citizens of his part of the county. He has won success by his well-directed, energetic efforts, and the prosperity that has come to him is certainly well deserved. Mr. Tredway was born in Watertown, New York, December 27, 1851, and is the oldest in a family of twelve children, whose parents were Lucius and Emeline (Waters) Tredway. The father, who was a farmer by occupation, moved from his New York home to Lake county, Illinois, when our subject was in his seventeenth year. The latter remained with his parents until he attained his majority, and then went to Waukegan, Illinois, to learn the miller's trade, at which he worked for one year, but, disliking that occupation, he commenced clerking in a store and serving as assistant postmaster at Ivanhoe, Illinois. In 1878 his parents removed from Lake county, Illinois, to Sac county, Iowa, and our subject followed one year later. In May, 1877, he had married Miss Etta Fox, who was born May 11, 1863, a daughter of Rev. A. K. Fox, of Ivanhoe, and to them have been born four children, namely: Frank, deceased; Bessie B., Florence and Roy D. Mr. Tredway continued his residence in Sac county, Iowa, for four years, removing to O'Brien county, that state, in the spring of 1881. Coming to Huron, South Dakota, in 1884, he purchased property and embarked in the livery business. On the 29th of February, 1885, he had the misfortune to have almost his entire belongings destroyed by fire, and he was again burned out in February, 1891. Besides losing everything of the latter fire, he was left $1,000 in debt, but his credit was good and he was able to borrow ample money to rent a barn and start in business again. The year 1898 found him doing a prosperous business in a large barn of his own, and also as a dealer in cattle. Besides this property he owns a very pretty home on Wisconsin street. Politically Mr. Tredway is identified with the Republican party, and he most capably and satisfactorily served as deputy sheriff of Beadle county for one term, from 1893 to 1897. This caused the political bee to buzz in his bonnet, and he was one of the eight aspirants for the nomination for sheriff, but was not the successful candidate. He has since learned that it is more profitable to devote his entire time and energies to his business affairs. Socially he is a member of the Modern Woodmen of America and the Ancient Order of United Workmen. He is a pleasant, genial gentleman and is very popular, having a most extensive circle of friends and acquaintances who esteem him highly for his genuine worth.
