Waters, he being the sole owner and proprietor. The year preceding, in company with R. C. Anderson, he had founded the Bank of St. Lawrence, which was conducted by Mr. Anderson. The Citizens Bank still continues as a private bank and does a general banking business. William H. Waters was born in Wayne county, New York, March 17, 1844. His parents, Zimri and Alice (Brewer) Waters, were natives respectively of New York and. New Jersey. The father was a farmer by occupation and died in his native state September 4, 1870, and the mother passed: away in 1896. The grandfather, William, Waters, came from Yorkshire, England, about 1806 and located in New York, where he passed the remainder of his life. Our subject was one of five children, two sons and three daughters, and the brother now owns the home farm. Mr. Waters engaged in youth as a sailor on the Great Lakes until 1871. The following year he went to Chicago, and after a short stay located in Osceola, Polk county, Nebraska, where he engaged in mercantile pursuits, and later removed to Aurora, Nebraska. He remained there until 1883, and then settled in Miller, South Dakota, since which time he has been operating the bank. He is also owner of large real estate interests. Mr. Waters was married in New York, in 1873, to Helen A. Hill, who died in 1879. One child, a daughter, was born to them, named Helen A. Our subject married Mina Myers, a native of New York, in July, 1883. One son has been born to Mr. and Mrs. Waters, upon whom they have bestowed the name of Glen M. Mr. Waters is a member of the Ancient Order of United Workmen and the Modern Woodmen of America. In politics he is a Republican, but has never sought or filled public office.
