Canada has furnished to the United States many bright, enterprising young men who have left the Dominion to enter the business circles with its more progressive methods, livelier competition and advancement more quickly secured. Among this number is Mr. Westover, the founder of Blunt, Hughes county, South Dakota, and a prominent hardware merchant of that place. He was born in the province of Quebec, Lower Canada, November 7, 1857, a son of S. E. and Mary (Howley) Westover, who lived and died in that country. At the age of twelve years he came to the United States and until twenty he made his home in Vermont, where he attended school. He then spent two years in Minnesota, and in 1877 drove from Iowa to the Black Hills, to follow his trade, that of carpentering. He worked for the Homestake Mining Company, and remained in the Hills until the fall of 1880, when he returned to Vermont on a visit. In the spring of 1881 he again started for the Hills, and, stopping at Pierre on his way, he concluded to remain in Hughes county. On the 6th of January, 1881, he came to what is now Blunt and took up a quarter section of land on the present town site, his being the only house between Miller and Pierre for some time. The following spring, however, other settlers took up their abode in the locality, and in the spring of 1883 he sold three- fourths interest in his land and platted the town of Blunt, soon selling the largest portion of the property. He was the first postmaster of that place and filled that office for six years and one month. He was engaged in the real estate business until 1893, when he embarked in the hardware trade, to which he now gives his entire attention, and by courtesy and fair dealing he has secured a liberal share of the public patronage. In 1883, Mr. Westover was united in marriage with Miss Abbie Bail, and to them have been born two daughters, Effie and Vera E., both living. Socially,.Mr. Westover affiliates with the Ancient Order of United Workmen and the Knights of the Maccabees, and politically is identified with the Populist party. In business affairs he has met with a well- deserved success, and his career has ever been such as to win for him confidence and respect of all with whom he has come in contact socially or in a business way.
