WHELLON, the popular and efficient auditor of Hughes county, occupies a high place in political circles in his state, and has a host of business and political friends in Hughes county. He is an old soldier and a substantial business man. Mr. Whellon was born in Elizabethtown, Canada, March 14, 1844. His parents were Charles and Mary (Marshall) Whellon, the father born in Brockville, Canada, and the mother a native of the state of New York. The father was a farmer by occupation, and removed to Illinois in 1857, locating in McHenry county. He died in 1886, in California while there on a visit. Of a family of six sons, our subject is the only one residing in South Dakota. He was reared and educated in Illinois, and in 1862 enlisted in Company E, Ninety-fifth Illinois Volunteer Infantry, and served three years. He took part in the battles of Champion Hill and Vicksburg, and in the latter engagement was wounded in the shoulder, and had the fingers of his left hand shot away. He was in the hospital for some time, and then served as military postmaster until the close of the war. He then returned home, and in 1866 went to Butler county, Iowa, and later to Clay county, of that state. He went to the Black Hills in 1877, and in the fall of the same year located in Colorado, where he was engaged in mining. In 1889 he took up his residence in Pierre, and has become one of its most prominent citizens. He engaged in the real estate business until 1893, when he was appointed deputy county auditor, and in 1896 he was elected auditor of Hughes county. He was re-elected in 1898, and has discharged the duties of that responsible position with great ability and to the entire satisfaction of the people. In 1866 our subject was married to Susan W. Weeks. To them were born two children, namely: Charles A., and Nellie M., now Mrs. Burrows, of Denver, Colorado. Mr. Whellon was married to Gertie E. Farrington in 1885, and she departed this life in 1897. Wherever he has lived, our subject has always taken an active interest in political affairs, having served as sheriff of his county while in Iowa, and also served as mayor of the town of Garfield, Colorado. He is a stanch supporter of the Republican party and its principles, and his popularity is co- extensive with the wide circle of his acquaintance. He is a worthy member of the G. A. R. post at Pierre, and of the Ancient Order of United Workmen.
