WYLAND, a well known farmer and stock raiser of Hand county, is one of the residents of South Dakota whose faith in the future of the state is unlimited. He is not among the pioneer settlers of this region, but his experiences since his settlement have been of the most satisfactory nature, and his success in his chosen vocation gives him a basis for his belief. Our subject was born in Pottawattamie county, Iowa, July 28, 1861. The grandfather, Jonathan Wyland, operated a grist mill, woolen factory and saw mill near Goshen, Indiana for many years. The parents of our subject, Isaac and Julia A. (Miltonberger) Wyland, were natives of Indiana and Pennsylvania, respectively. The father was born in Elkhart county, Indiana, in 1832, and followed milling in that county, afterward moving to Iowa and locating in Shelby county, where he followed the same vocation until he went to Dakota in 1882. He settled on section 23 in Greenleaf township in Hand county, and engaged in farming and stock raising until 1896, when he returned to Iowa and again took up his residence in Shelby county, where he and the mother now reside. They were the parents of six children who grew to maturity, five sons and one daughter Our subject is the only one residing in Hand county. Receiving his education in Shelby county, Iowa, he went to Montana in 1885 and engaged in mining near Helena, remaining there until he went to Dakota in the spring of 1890. He settled on section 23 in Greenleaf township, and has since engaged in the raising of stock and dairy products. He has been remarkably successful and has a well improved farm. Our subject was married in 1897, Miss Annie F. Jemison being the lady of his choice. Mrs. Wyland is a native of Iowa, and a daughter of Alfred and Mary (Pack) Jemison. They are the parents of one son, born July 25 1899, and named Isaac. Mr. Wyland holds membership in the Knights of Pythias and the Ancient Order of United Workmen. In political views he is a free silver independent and is popular in his township and county. He has served in various offices and is a member of the town board and has been assessor.
