BERG.-Among the foreign-born residents of Brookings county, who are thoroughly identified with American civilization and progress, may be noted Ola O. Berg. His farm comprises the northeast quarter of section 8, Volga township, and the usual improvements have been made, and such arrangements consummated as make it a comfortable home. Mr. Berg was born in Norway, March 9, 1848. He attended the public schools of the district, and worked as a farm laborer among the farmers in the vicinity in which he was born until he was twenty years of age, and then started for America by the way of England and Quebec, and went from there to La Crosse, Wisconsin. Here he was employed in the lumber business for four or five years and then went to Eau Claire, Wisconsin, and was engaged in the lumber business there until he went to Volga, South Dakota, in 1877. He then located a homestead near Volga village, and later traded that place for a tree claim, and has since placed upon it the numerous improvements that have so greatly increased its value since it came into his possession. He has a neat set of farm buildings, and a house wherein he, his wife and his children have as cozy a home as one might wish to see. The farm is stocked with four horses, nine head of cattle, ten hogs and a small flock of sheep. October 12, i88i, Mr. Berg was united in marriage to Miss Jennie Meng, daughter of Jense and Mary Meng, natives of Denmark. Mrs. Berg was born June 29, 1859. To this congenial union have been born eight children, of whom six are now living, namely: Laura, Jens, Olaf, Carl, Oscar (deceased), Anna (deceased), Minnie and Nelse. The family are members of the Lutheran church. Politically, Mr. Berg endorses the policy of the Populist party.
