HALL. - This name will be readily recognized by many of the citizens of Volga, and Brookings county, as one of the leading business men of that thriving village. Mr. Hall was born at Rockford, Illinois, November 25, 1856. His father, Charles Hall, a native of Massachusetts, was engaged in the livery business at Rockford, and died there in 1858. His mother was born in New York and died at Rockford in 1890 at the age of sixty-two years. Our subject spent his boyhood at Rockford, and received a preliminary education in the public schools of that place, which he supplemented by a course in the high school, and acquired an education which has enabled him to conduct his business in a strictly first-class manner. While in Rockford he learned the tinner's trade, and later, when he moved to New Hampton, Iowa, this was his occupation. In 1880 he went to Tyler, Minnesota, where he established a hardware business and operated the same at that place about two years, and then moved his stock of goods to Volga, Brookings county, South Dakota, secured a fine, large building, stocked it with a full line of hardware, stoves, ranges, etc., and has since added to it a full stock of lumber, his house and yard being one of the largest in the county. Mr. Hall is a member of the I. O. O. F. lodge of Volga, of which he has passed all the chairs and now holds the office of secretary. He is one of the pioneers of this lodge, being one of its organizers in 1887 and has since been actively interested in the affairs of the order. Mr. Hall is a man of good business qualifications, and, by careful attention to the various details of his work, has built up an extensive and profitable trade. He is public spirited and active in all matters pertaining to the general welfare, and has a large circle of warm friends.
