D J HAUGEBERG, present Register of Deeds of Moody county, South Dakota, is a native of Winneshiek county, Iowa. His parents, John T. and Rachel (Aaker) Haugeberg, were natives of Norway, and emigrated from thence to America in 1846 and settled, first, in Muskegon, Wisconsin, and three years later moved to Winneshiek county, Iowa. Here he lived until 1877, when he sold out his farm and went to Moody county, South Dakota, and settled in Alliance township. Here he took a claim of a half section of prairie land, improved and cultivated it, and has made it his home since. They are the parents of twelve children, ten of whom are now living: Anna, deceased, wife of Harry Midbon, and mother of two children; Alice Espeseth; Isabel Aaker; John; Ole; Theodore; an infant, deceased; D. J., the subject of this sketch; Louis; Minnie; Thomas, and Anna, all of whom are members of the Lutheran church. D. J. Haugeberg, of whom this is a brief life history, was born July 17, 1863. He received his preliminary education in the public schools of Ridgeway, Iowa, and subsequently took a commercial course at Decorah, Iowa, from which he graduated in 1882. He came to Dakota in 1878, where he remained with his parents, helping on the farm until he arrived at the age of twenty-one years. He then began for himself, hiring to a farmer in the vicinity for one year. The second year he bought one hundred and sixty acres of unimproved land and proceeded to make a home and develop his quarter, section of prairie into a productive and profitable farm. Besides his own farm he has rented large tracts of land and has been extensively engaged in farming. He has also added to his original farm from time to time, as he became able, and now owns three hundred and twenty acres, all under cultivation. Mr. Haugeberg was united in marriage to Miss Oleanna Christianson, of Fillmore county, Minnesota, in the year 1885. She died in August, 1892, leaving one son, James Lancelot, born May 21, 1887. Mr. Haugeberg is a member of the Masonic order, in which he has attained the consistory degrees. He is also a member of the Modern Woodmen of America and of the A. 0. U. W. at Flandreau. Politically he was originally a Republican, but he is now a stanch advocate of the principles of the Populist party, and is an active worker and a leader in the same. He has a number of times been delegate to the county conventions, and was one of the organizers of the Populist party in Moody county. In 1890 he was elected on the Populist ticket to the office of register of deeds of Moody county and served two years. He was in the field again in 1892 but was defeated; but was re-elected in 1894 and again in 1896. Mr. Haugeberg is a self-made man. Starting in life without means or influence, he has raised himself by dint of his own efforts and ability. As a register of deeds he has proved himself one of the best qualified for that position. He is, without doubt, one of the best penmen in the county, and the records are a marvel of neatness and fine penmanship. In local matters he is always ready to lend a helping hand to every project tending to the improvement or better government of his adopted county.
