HYLAND is a well-known farmer of Lake county. He resides on section 21, Nunda township. Mr. Hyland was born in Norway, May 25, 1844, and is the son of Eric and Martha (Hemrey) Hyland, both natives of Norway. Mrs. Hyland died there in 1859, and in 1870 Eric Hyland come to this country, settling upon a farm in Freeborn county, Minnesota, where he now lives. Our subject preceded his father to America, leaving Norway in 1867, and after arriving here went directly to Chicago, where he remained for eight years. He then went to Boone county, Illinois, working upon a farm for the next year, after which he went to Freeborn county, Minnesota. He lived there until 1879, when he came to Lake county and took up a homestead and a tree claim. He afterward traded his land for another farm in the same township, and finally purchased the 320-acre tract which be now owns. It is well improved, with respect to buildings, water supply, shade trees, etc., and the soil, which is very rich, is nearly all under cultivation. Mr. Hyland has been very successful since coming to South Dakota, and has in the last few years amassed a competence. He is a Republican politically, and has held a number of local offices in his township. Mr. Hyland married Miss Sarah Hanson in Wisconsin, in 1879. Mrs. Hyland is a daughter of Edward and Esther Hanson, both residents of Boone county, Illinois. Mr. and Mrs. Hyland are the parents of seven children: Mollie, aged twenty; Edwin, sixteen; Lillie, fourteen; Anna, eleven; Irving, nine; Oscar, seven; and Henry, now four years old., The family are members of and regularly attend the Prairie Queen Lutheran church in Summit township.
