SANFORD is cashier of the Kingsbury County Bank, which is located at DeSmet, and is a well-known and popular citizen. Mr. Sanford was born at Prairie City, McDonough county, Illinois, January 12, 1865. His parents, H. Chauncey and Mary L. (Hollister) Sanford, were natives respectively of New York and Massachusetts. The former was born March 25, 1825, and the latter September 2, 1836. They were pioneers of Illinois, having been married in Fulton county, January 1, 1853, and afterward settled in Prairie City, where Mr. Sanford died February 25, 1884. He was an attorney-at-law, and practiced for over thirty years, during which time he acquired an enviable reputation for his integrity and ability. Mrs. Sanford still survives, making her home with her children, of whom there were nine, six of whom are now living. Edwin was educated at the Prairie City Academy and the public schools, and when seventeen years of age secured employment in the Prairie City Bank, in his native city. He remained there until March, 1884, when he came to South Dakota and accepted a position as bookkeeper in the Kingsbury County Bank. When the bank was incorporated, in 1885, he became a stockholder and also cashier. He has since discharged the duties of his position in an able manner, and has done much to forward the interests of the bank, which is now one of the leading moneyed institutions in that part of the state. Mr. Sanford is a Republican in politics, but has given very little attention to public matters, the bank and his business interests absorbing all of his time. He is a member of the Masonic fraternity. On the 2d of August, 1890, Mr. Sanford and Miss Mary Power were married at DeSmet. Mrs. Sanford, who was born in Livingston county, New York, April 3, 1866, is a daughter of Thomas P. and Elizabeth (Donnelly) Power, who settled in Minnesota at an early day, and from there came to DeSmet in June, 1879, where they now reside. They were parents of six children living.
