TUFTE, who resides on section 21, Nunda township, Lake county, is one of the energetic and prosperous farmers of that locality. Mr. Tufte was born in Norway on the 28th of April, 1843. His father, Iver Tufte, whose birth occurred in 1818 in the same country, was a farmer by occupation. He came to the United States with his family in 1870, settling in Freeborn county, Minnesota, where he purchased one hundred and sixty acres of land. Our subject's mother, whose maiden name was Martha Dyrdal, was also a native of Norway. Andrew made a trip to America in 1867, but returned to his native country in December of the following year. He remained there until 1870, and then, with his parents, crossed the Atlantic once more, and located in Freeborn county, Minnesota. He worked upon his father's farm there for two years and then bought eighty acres for himself, which he tilled very profitably until 1879. In that year Mr. Tufte became a resident of Lake county and took up a homestead claim on section 21, Nunda township. He now owns two hundred and forty acres of rich, well improved land. with an excellent residence, large and substantial barns, fences, outbuildings, etc., and his farm is considered one of the finest in Nunda township. Mr. Tufte is a Republican in p6litical affairs, and for six terms has served as assessor of his township, being still the incumbent of that office. He is a member of the Prairie Queen Lutheran church, situated in Summit township. In June, 1872, Mr. Tufte married Miss Annie Dyrdal, a daughter of Peter and Anna Dyrdal, and a native of Norway. Mrs. Tufte died in 1882. Five children were the issue of this marriage, four of whom are deceased. One daughter named Martha still survives. Mr. Tufte subsequently remarried, his second wife being Miss Martha Dalen, who was also of Norwegian birth. She died on the 14th of September, 1896. Mrs. Tufte was the mother of three children, one of whom died in infancy. The others, Sopha and Anna, are now living upon the homestead.
