The locality known as the Black Hills is about as large as the State of Connecticut. It is located in the extreme southwestern portion of South Dakota, including between the meridian 25 deg. 30 min. and 28 deg. longitude west of Washington and between 45 deg. 20 min. and 44 deg. 45 min. north latitude so that two-thirds of the Black Hills are located in Wyoming. The railroads are the Chicago & Northwestern, the Burlington & Missouri River, C M & St P Ry & Rapid City, Black Hills & Western. The principal towns of the Hills are Deadwood, Rapid City, Sturgis, Central City, Lead, Terry, Hot Springs, Custer City, Spearfish, Belle Fourche, Whitewood, Buffalo Gap, Hill City, Hermosa, Edgemont and Keystone, which see for list of names.
