All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ************************************************************** This brief history of the Emanuel Cemetery was found with the WPA Graves Registration Project Transcribed by Joy Fisher, sdgenweb@yahoo.com In the first part of Oct. 1907, a meeting was called by the consistory of The Emanuel Reformed Church Of Springfield So. Dak. for the purpose of providing a Church Cemetery, to which all members interested were invited. Meeting was held Oct. 9 1907. An organization was formed and was called the Emanuel Cemetery Association. The Rev. Henry Schipper was elected Pres. J. Wandscheer, vice Pres. U. Wringa sec. John Renzema treas. and Peter Ludens sexton, sixty one shares were subscribed for; A commitee was appointed to buy from James Kirk, owner of the land on which the Church was located, about two acres of land for cemetery purposes, just south of the church. This request was refused by Mr. Kirk. Mr. Edward Holleman then offered to sell to the association a location about 1/2 mile north-east of the church, which offer was accepted. Mr Holleman then caused the location to be plated. Plating was done by J. C. Young, County surveyer. Work of plating was finished Nov. 6 1907. Plat recorded & filed in Register of Deeds office Dec. 6 1907. in Plat book #2, page 72 at Tyndall, County Seat Of Bon Homme County State of So. Dak. Deed granted and recorded Jan. 15 1908. Recorded in book 12 of deeds page 37. First fenced with wooden posts and four foot stock fence, all around. About 1934 wooden posts were replaced with those of steel and four foot ornamental wire fence four feet high with one inch pipe through top of posts also name over new gate name made of metal letters. Rev. Schipper left this place in fall of 190.9 Edward Holleman was elected Pres. to take his place. John Renzema left this place in March 1919 B. Kuiper was elected Treas. At a meeting held in March 1925 John Wandscheer was Sec & Treas. As U. Wringa was leaving. From that time on intrest seemed to die. On Oct. 16 1936 a meeting was held by by intrested members of the Church and upon request of old members present, new Officers were elected as follows J. D. Kuiper Pres, Pierre Eringa, Sec & Treas, Jacob Ludens Sexton. All of Springfield. These men have tryed to bring the records up to date and are also keeping them up. The work done by the Graves Registration Project workers is very highly appreciates by them, and also by the members at large. While there are no Veterans graves in this Cemetery as yet there are a good number of the members of this Church have served in the World War. G. C.
