History of Hitt Cemetery, Bon Homme Co, SD This brief history of the Hitt Cemetery Association was found with the WPA Graves Registration Project enumeration of the cemetery. The WPA schedules were dated Nov., 1940. History of Hitt Cemetery Association The site for this cemetery was procured Jan. 11, 1883 from Henry M. Pitt, an unmarried man, through Clement Flagg, Phenias Crandall, A. A. Perkins, D.W. Rapallee and H.P. Hitt trustees of the Hitt Cemetery Association, of Bon Homme Co. Territory of Dakota, in consideration of One dollar ($1.00) This certain piece of land for Cemetery purposes is described as follows:- Commencing at a point 10R. West and 2R. south of teh N.E. 1/4 of Sec 34 in Twn. 94N. R61W.- Thence on a line west 16R. Thence on a line running so. 20R. Thence E. 16R. Thence N. 20R. to the place of beginning, all being in said N.E. 1/4 Sec 34 containing 2 acres. The above is recorded in Book I, Page 214, Register of Deeds Office, Tyndall, So.Dak. In Book F. Page 404, Register of Deeds Office, Tyndall, So.Dak. is found the following certification:- I hereby certify that the accompanying Plat is a correct survey of the Hitt Cemetery comprising part of the N.E. 1/4 of the N.E. 1/4 of Sec.34 T94N. R61W. of the 5th, P.M. in Bon Homme, Co. Territory of Dakota. The blocks, lots, and Streets and alleys with length and widths thereof as shown on the accompanying plate, all well marked with cedar stakes firmly set in the ground. Survey completed on the 13th, day of April A. D. 1883. By Wm Herrington, Surveyor Also in Book I, Page 486, Henry P. Hitt an unmarried man in consideration of $1.00 sold and conveyed to Henry Dur(?)ey, W. E. Case, H.B. Paddock, J.P. Richmond and J. Colgan, Trustees of the Methodist Episcopal Church, Tyndall charge and Yankton District and their successors in office forever all that certain piece or parcel of land situated in Bon Homme co. territory of Dakota as follows:- Commencing at the N. E. corner of the N. E. 1/4 of Sec. 34 in T94N. R61W. Thence So. 22R. Thence W. 10R. Thence N.22R. Thence E. 10R. to place of beginning, containing 1 acre and 60R.- In trust however, that said premises shall be used, kept, maintained and disposed of as a place of divine worship for the use of the Minister and Membership of the Methodist Episcopal Church of the U. S. subject to the Discipline usages and appointments of said church.
