Lutheran Church of Avon was found with the WPA Graves Registration Project records for the Weslyan Methodist Cemetery. Transcribed by Joy Fisher, sdgenweb@yahoo.com On Dec. 3, 1889 Dick Harbert and wife Gretje, Ralph Veenkers and Geske his wife of Lyon County, Iowa, deeded to the German Lutheran Church, conditionally, to be used for church purpose only 5 acres of land, in the form of a square, described as beginning 80 rods east of the southwest corner of said Southeast quarter of section ten (10) Jefferson Township 94 N., R 61 W. of the 5th P.M. In 1890 a church and parsonage was built, cemetery plated, including one buriel. In 1894, The German Lutheran Church under the pastorate of Rev. Ehlen drew up a regular constitution, which all members signed. In 1913, The German Lutheran Church under the pastorate of Rev. G. W. Steinmeyer, incorporated, including all the members all the members of the country church, the parsonage having been moved to Avon some previous, since known as The Zion Ev. Lutheran Church, Avon, So. Dak. In 1923 the country church was sold, leaving the Cemetery fenced and plated in care of the regular elected cemetery committee of the Zion Ev.
