Blachnik Letter, 1896

                           March 29, 1896

Dearest children:

   Received your letter Mar. 26. We're answering
immediately. You asked about Mother's
horse, I think its better, nothing is noticeable
anymore on her leg, looks like its already
good. We are both well. Hambergers send you
greetings. Must tell you that Mary, Karl, after
Easter will marry Morsickov Josef, he owns land
on reservation behind Tyndall. Frank is
sending you greetings, he has rented for 5 years
land near Bon Homme. You wrote that we
should write the ages of Dad and I, am sending
it, your father was born year 1814, is now 
82 years old, I born 1827, I am now 69 years old
and you were born 1867, 2nd of February.
Must also write that Wagners aren't operating
saloon, rented it for $12.00 per month to Sladek
from Yankton and he closed up. Kostals rented
both Saloons for $20.00 to a Hlolwut Kerr from 
Yankton and will now be on the farm. Mrs. Kostal
is very sick a long time. Vaclav Janda 
died. Greetings to Grandma Adolf's and 
children, know that Klarka (Clara) is big
already. Be sure to write again soon. Greetings
to Adolph & you. Would Grandma have enough
of 400, only know how long she will live.

This is commentary after the translation:

(Margene Schaefer's great-great-grand parents)
The Frank & Anna Blachnik wrote this 
letter, they are the one that immigrated
to America in 1867. Hambergers mentioned
in the letter would also be your great-great
grandparents. The Frank mentioned in letter
was Frank Blachnik their son & brother
to Frances Blachnik Haas to whom this letter
was written. He then owned this land
in Bon Homme. The grandma mentioned 
must have been Adolf Haas' mother, she must
have moved to Maryland with them. Klarka
was Czech for Clara & she was the Haas' oldest
daughter who later married Charles Bliss.
Presume the 400 was in dollars, as mentioned
they must have had a lot of fruit (pears)
where they lived because she mentioned
at the end that it would be nice to have
some.
