(1897) Author: Geo. Ogle & Co. JULIUS BRUYER, one of the thrifty and enterprising farmers of Fairview township, Clay county, was born in France. His father and mother, August and Josephine (Simon) Bruyer, were both natives of that country and emigrated to America about a year after our subject was born. They lived in Chicago a year after arrival, then until 1858 in Dubuque, Iowa, at which time they came to the territory of Dakota. The elder Bruyer took up a homestead in what is now Fairview township, Clay county, where he settled with his family, and there he still resides. Of a family of five children born to this couple our subject was the third, and first opened his eyes to the light of day September 18, 1853. He was a member of the parental household until he was thirty-one years of age, at which time he was married to Miss Susanna Birgen, who was born in Sac county, Wis., June 26, 1864. Her father and mother, Michael and Elizabeth (Decker) Birgen, are now residents of Chickasaw county, Iowa, and of their family of ten children, Mrs. Bruyer was the seventh in order of birth. The ceremony which united the lives of our subject and Miss Birgen was performed January 23, 1883, after which the young couple took up their domestic life on the farm where they now reside. The estate consists of 569 acres, all improved and under cultivation, and on this Mr. Bruyer is carrying on a general farming and stock-raising business. Mr. and Mrs. Bruyer are the parents of four sons, Philip M., Lawrence A., Elmer L., and Nicholas J., and the family are members of the Catholic church in Fairview township and regular attendants. Mr. Bruyer has held several of the township offices, is a popular man and is highly esteemed and respected by his many friends and acquaintances.
