(1897) Author: Geo. Ogle & Co. HON. AARON CARPENTER, one of the early settlers of Vermillion township, Clay county, on section 18, of which he now makes his home, is a native of Vermont. His father, Jebediah Carpenter, was born in Surrey, N. H., in 1802, and his mother, Elizabeth Chamberlain, was also a native of the Granite state. After their marriage they settled in Concord, where the wife and mother passed to her reward beyond the grave in 1847. Mr. Carpenter subsequently came to Vermillion, and he died at the residence of our subject in 1888. Of the three sons and one daughter born to this couple, Aaron was the second, and first opened his eyes to the light July 7, 1826. He was reared in his native place on a farm, and continued to make his home there until 1857, in August of which year he came west, stopping in Trempealeau county, Wis. The following spring he was joined by his family, and, with his wife and 1 children, he located in Dixon county, Neb., and there followed farming until he came to Dakota and settled on the farm where he now lives. That was in the spring of 1861, and since then he has been a constant resident of section 18, Vermillion township. He has made many improvements on his farm of some 250 acres, and it is one of the most valuable farming tracts in the township. The marriage of our subject and Miss Kezia Russell, a native of Middlesex, Vt., born August 19, 1829, was celebrated in Concord, on June 21, 1849. Her father and mother, John M. and Sally (Foss) Russell, both passed away in Concord, and of the twelve children born to their union, Mrs. Carpenter was the seventh in order of birth. Five children have come to bless the married life of Mr. and Mrs. Carpenter, viz.: Alba J.; Jean, who died when about four and one-half years old; George L.; Carrie M., the wife of Edward D. Cowles; and John A. Our subject has been closely identified with the public life of Clay county. He was a member of the territorial legislature two terms, and sheriff of the county two years, and he was also a member of the first board of county commissioners, being appointed by the governor. In educational matters Mr. Carpenter has also taken quite an interest, having assisted in building the first school house erected in South Dakota, and on the question of temperance he is also on the right side. Religiously, both he. and his wife belong to the Baptist denomination, having been reared from childhood in the faith of the Free-will Baptist church.
