(1897) Author: Geo. Ogle & Co. CHARLES CHAUSSEE, Jr. This gentleman is one of the enterprising and substantial citizens of Fairview township, Clay county, wherein he is devoting his time and attention to the cultivation of 320 acres of as fine farming land as is to be found in the county, located in section 15. He is a son of Charles and Zoway (Launderman) Chaussee, who came with their family to Clay county in 1861, and settled in Fairview township, where they still make their home. Our subject first saw the light of day in Montreal, Canada, April 15, 1845, and about eighteen months later his parents took him with them to the “States” and settled in Dubuque county, Iowa, where he was educated and lived until 1861. He continued to be a member of the parental household after the family removed to Dakota until he took a most important step in his career, his marriage in Vermillion, May 10, 1868, after which with his young bride he settled on the farm whereon he now lives. Mrs. Chaussee was known in her girlhood as Miss Lucinda J. Shriner, a daughter of William and Patience Shriner, and was born in Belmont county, Ohio, October 19, 1848. Mrs. Shriner died in Barnesville, Ohio, in 1852, and her husband still survives and makes his home in Vermillion. Mr. and Mrs. Chaussee are the parents of six children, viz.: Mary E., now Mrs. Eldon Dimick; Rose E., the wife of George Waterman; Frederick, William J. and Flora E. Edward, the other child, died in infancy. Although Mr. Chaussee has been engaged exclusively in farming since coming to Dakota, he has nevertheless taken quite a degree of interest in local matters like all good citizens should. He has held some of the school offices and is a stanch friend of education.
