A. Ogle & Co. (1897) HON. DARWIN M. INMAN, a prominent business man of Vermillion, is a native of the Empire state, born in Clarendon, Orleans county. He was reared on a farm and attended the common schools in which he was taught the elementary branches of learning. Later he became a student at the Holley and Albion (New York) academies, where he was fitted for college, and in due time graduated from the Rochester university. On the completion of his education he taught school in his native state for a while (he yet holds a New York state teacher's certificate) and then decided on coming west. He arrived in Vermillion, Dak. Ter., December 30, 1874, and shortly afterward engaged in banking with M. D. Thompson and M. J. Lewis, they conducting a private bank until the First National bank of Vermillion was organized a few years later, at which time our subject was elected president. He is also a member of the firm of Thompson & Lewis, grain and agricultural implement dealers, and is quite largely interested in buying and selling real estate in different sections of the country. Politically Mr. Inman has always affiliated with the Democratic party, and being the possessor of sound judgment and business ability, and integrity of character beyond reproach, he has been frequently called upon to accept public offices. He was elected supervisor of his native town in New York state two terms, and in the spring of 1876, after coming to Vermillion, was elected alderman and chosen president of the board. The fall of the same year-1876 -he was elected a member of the territorial legislature, and was re-elected to the same position twice, serving in all three terms in that body. He was also a member of the first state legislature and served for six years as chairman of the Democratic state central committee. Mr. Inman is a stanch friend of education and has been closely identified with the growth and progress of the State university, having served as director and trustee four terms. He is now a member of the present board of trustees of that institution. Socially our subject belongs to Incense lodge No. 12, F. & A. M., chapter No. 2i, of Vermillion, DeMolay commandary No. 3, of Yankton, and Elriad shrine of Sioux Falls. The marriage of our subject and Miss Adele Lewis, a native of New York state, was celebrated December 28, 1874.
