GEORGE WELLS RICHARDSON, well-known as one of the prominent farmers of Spirit Mound township, Clay county, in section 11, of which he is operating a valuable farm of 160 acres that he is the fortunate owner of, is a native of Rock county, Wis., born April 28, 1854. His father and mother, Alonzo and Cordelia (Hoyt) Richardson, were both born in New York, located after their marriage in Rock county, Wis., and left the Badger state in 1878 and settled in Spirit Mound township, Clay county, where Mr. Richardson passed to the world beyond, March 24, 1888. His good wife still survives. George W. Richardson was the only child born to this union. He was reared and educated in his native county and there married, February 22, 1877, Miss Kate Ellen Backenstoe, who was born in the same county January 27, 1855. Mrs. Richardson's parents, George A. and Ellen (Hoxie) Backenstoe, were natives of Pennsylvania and Maine respectively. After their marriage they settled in Rock county, Wis., and there he died January 25, 1894. Mrs. Backenstoe still survives as do also five children of their family of three sons and four daughters, of whom Mrs. Richardson was the third in order of birth. Mr. Richardson during the latter-part of his residence in Wisconsin was engaged in the mercantile business in Evansville, but since coming to Dakota, which was in the spring of 1878, he has exclusively devoted his attention to agriculture, and .has constantly resided since that time in Spirit Mound township. He has taken quite an interest in local political matters and public affairs of the community, has held various of the township offices, and since 1884 has served as postmaster of Bloomingdale post office. Socially he is a member of the M. W. A. Mr. and Mrs. Richardson have a cozy home and the family circle is completed by five children, viz.: Fred A., Claude W., Charles B., Lillian E. and Henry.
