(1897) Author: Geo. Ogle & Co. GEORGE C. THORSON. The agricultural element that has been so largely instrumental in the upbuilding of Clay county is finely represented by this gentleman, one of its native born citizens, who has a valuable farm in Vermillion township, of which he is a leading farmer and one of the most prominent citizens. The father of our subject, the late Rasmus Thorson, was born near Bergen, Norway, in 1829, and emigrated therefrom to America in the latter part of the '50s and settled in La Salle county, Ill. There he was married to Miss Martha R. Duland, also a native of Norway, and early in the '60s he and his wife removed to Dakota territory and settled in Vermillion township. He died April 21, 1883, aged fifty-four years. His memory is held in reverence as one of the most useful pioneers of the county, who were very active in its development. He of whom we write is the second child of a family of three sons and four daughters and was born on his father’s homestead in Vermillion township, September 22, 1863. He was educated in the district schools and always remained at home assisting his father in his farming operations until the latter’s death. He has 400 acres of well improved land in section 3, on which he has commodious and conveniently arranged buildings, and has fine farming machinery for the purpose of carrying on his farm labors. He engages principally in the cultivation of his land, raising grain and other products and deriving therefrom a substantial income. September 30, 1888, Mr. Thorson and Miss Rachel Nelson solemnized their marriage at Vermillion. She is a native of this county and a daughter of Eric Nelson now residing in Spirit Mound township. Mr. and Mrs. Thorson’s happy wedded life has been productive of four children, namely: Rosa M., Erick Richard, George Roy and Ernest. They are members of the Norwegian Lutheran church, and Mr. Thorson has been a member of the school board.
