(1897) Author: Geo. Ogle & Co. HON. CANUTE WEEKS, of Vermillion township, is one of the pioneers of Clay county. He was born near Bergen, Norway, September 10, 1839, and his early life and boyhood was spent in his native place. He attended the common schools for an education, and assisted in the cultivation of his father’s farm until he had attained the age of seventeen years, at which time he desired to seek his fortune in the new world. Accordingly he emigrated, and upon arriving at Quebec went direct to LaSalle county, Ill., where he was engaged at different occupations until the spring of 1860, coming to Clay county, Dak. Ter., at that time. He entered a government claim of 160 acres in section 2, of Vermillion township, and this has since been his home farm and the base of his extensive farming interests. He has erected a fine set of buildings, complete in every detail, and is now the owner of 880 acres of land. The marriage of our subject and Miss Carrie Nelson was celebrated in Vermillion township in 1864. Mrs. Weeks is, like her husband, a native of Norway, and their union has been blessed to them by the advent of seven children, viz.: Lee, Henry, Nellie, Nels, Anna, Mamie and Martin. Mr. Weeks was a member of the territorial council one term and also of the lower house of the legislature, and he has also served as county commissioner. In fact in all local matters he is well known, and in religious affairs he is likewise an active worker, holding membership in the Norwegian Lutheran church. The parents of Mr. Weeks were Hans and Rachael (Thorson) Weeks. They came to America in 1859, and located in La Salle county, Ill., but the next year in August, they arrived in Dakota territory, and took up a claim in Spirit Mound township, Clay county, where they both passed from time to eternity. Of the five children born to this worthy couple, four sons and one daughter, our subject was the eldest.
