Watertown, Codington Co., SD - Methodist Episcopal Church Records, 1888 This information is from "Palmer's Directory of the Methodist Episcopal Church for Dakota Conference - 1888" by Rev. John G. Palmer. Pages 135-137 Information transcribed by Joy Fisher, sdgenweb@yahoo.com Watertown Rev. A. D. Chase, a local elder of the West Wisconsin Conference, preached the first sermon near Watertown in the house of Mr. Richardson, in the summerof 1878. In the following summer Rev. Chase began regular Methodist services in Watertown, and received a number of church letters. With these members he hels class and prayer meetings, and served as pastor. In the fall of this year - 1879 - Rev. S. Snyder was appointed pastor, and formally organized the class. Rev. Snyder began the work of building a parsonage. During the next summer Chaplain McCabe visited the charge, and secured a subscription to build a church. In the fall Rev. A. D. Chase was assigned to the pastorate. He completed the parsonage and got the church building well under way, when Rev. William Fielder, in 1881, was appointed th the charge. Rev. Fielder completed the church building and made an addition to the parsonage. Rev's A. D. Traveller and W. H. Selleck have served the charge. The church building not being large enough to meet the needs of the people, it was sold, and now, under the superintendence of Rev. E. E. Clough, a fine and commodious edifice is to be built. Lots have been purchased, and the building funds are to be raised in shares of $10 each. The church will be from the same plan as the M. E. churches of Oregon, Ill., and Platteville, Wis. Rev. Clough has had large experience as pastor and presiding elder, and will undoubtedly meet with grand success in his work for the year. At present, there are 204 members. Local Preachers - Rev. A. D.
