Ry., 60 miles south of Deadwood. Is an incorporated town goverend by board of trustees. At this point the first gold discoveries in the Black Hills were made. A progressive and up-to-date town. Has four churches, two banks, good graded schools, water works system, and lighted by acetylene gas. The Westinghouse Electric Co has large interests here in the mica beds. About two-thirds of the mica produced in the United States is mined near this place. Sylvan Lake, a summer resort, is located near town. The State Sanitarium for the Cure of Tuberculosis is located here. Large shipments of ambligonite are made from this point. Also extensive tin deposits. Population 1,000. Elevation 5,316 feet.
