Religious service in paper. Jake Finkbeiner was born March 30, 1909 at Jud, N.D., to Lena (Forkel) and Otto Finkbeiner. At age eight he moved with his family to northeast of Roscoe. He lived there until he married Katie Diegel Oct. 30, 1932 at Roscoe Lutheran Church. Work and locations in paper. He is survived by his wife, Katie of Roscoe; one son and daughter-in-law: Delbert and Martha Finkbeiner of Roscoe; two sisters: Lena Ohm of Albert Lea, MN and Anne Sonnenfeld of Lodi, CA and two grandchildren: Michael Finkbeiner of Aberdeen and Silka Finkbeiner of Roscoe. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and three sisters. THE BOWDLE PIONEER March 19, 1992 DOROTHY HAUPT BURR Services for Dorothy Haupt Burr were held March 4, 1992 in Hudson, CO. She died Feb. 28, 1992 after an extended battle with cancer and was interred at Ft. Logan National Cemetery at Denver, CO. Dorothy Haupt was born in Bowdle, Aug. 21, 1927 to longtime Bowdle residents, Katherine and Ernest Haupt. She was the eldest of the six Haupt children. After graduation from Bowdle High School she married John Burr and moved to the Burke area where they farmed fro many years. Three sons were born to their union: Douglas Burr of Hudson, CO; David of Thronton, CO and Donald of Lochbuie, CO. After moving to Colorado, Dorothy Burr worked for many years as dietician for Hudson Public Schools. She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Elaine Anderson. Survivors include her husband, three sons, three sisters: Lois McDermed of Commerce City, CO; Maybelle Greiss of Aberdeen and Grace Hough of Brandon and one brother: Harris Haupt of Rapid City. THE BOWDLE PIONEER April 30, 1992 BERNARD GABRIEL The funeral for Bernard Gabriel, age 82 of Ipswich, was April 22 at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Ipswich with the Rev. Marvin McPhee officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery under the direction of Hein Funeral Home in Ipswich. He died Monday, April 20, 1992 at Colonial Manor in Ipswich. Bernard Gabriel was born Jan. 10, 1910 to Ignatz and Marian (Weigel) Gabriel in Faulk County near Onaka. He attended school in Onaka. He married Carolina Meier at Roscoe Sept. 14, 1930. They lived in Onaka where they had a produce business. He later did carpenter work, road construction and did some livestock trucking. He retired in 1983. Work and club work in paper. Survivors include his wife of Ipswich; two daughters: Mrs. Clem (Lorraine) Binfet of Ipswich and Mrs. Melvin (Gladys) Schumacher of Hoven; four brothers: Paul Gabriel of Sioux City, IA; Leo Gabriel of Ft. Pierre; Frank Gabriel of Bowdle; Lawrence Gabriel of Harrold; four sisters: Kate Keller of Clatskaine, OR; Elizabeth Giesinger of Worthington, MN; Ann Lentz of Hartington, NE; Phyllis Nichols of Sioux City, IA; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and four sisters. THE BOWDLE PIONEER April 30, 1992 OTTO BUECHLER Otto Buechler, age 68 of Billings, MT died April 5, 1992 following a stroke. He was the son of the late Fred J. and Mathilda Buechler of Terry, MT and a nephew of Magdalena Schlecht of Bowdle. THE BOWDLE PIONEER May 7, 1992 RAYMOND W. NELSON Services for Raymond W. Nelson, age 93, of Aberdeen, were April 28 at the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Bowdle. More on service in paper. Death came swiftly in the early morning hours April 24, 1992, at St. Luke's Midland Regional Medical Center in Aberdeen. Raymond Nelson was born March 14, 1899 at Chicago, IL, to Andrew and Anna Nelson, Losing his mother at a very early age, he was placed in an orphanage when he was four. At age six he entered Glenwood (IL) Military School where he remained until age 14 when he was sent by train to the Bowdle area where he was placed in contract to Fred Mertz until his 21st birthday. He married Elsie Hagele June 10, 1924 at Bowdle. they farmed many years in the area. More on work and community involvement in paper. He leave his wife, Elsie of Aberdeen; two sons: Kenneth Nelson of Aberdeen; three daughters: Venerva Kraft of Renton, WA; Lavonne Rohrbach of Bowdle and Julie Buechler of Litchfield, MN; 15 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Arthur. Pallbearers were grandsons: Troy, Terry and Chris Nelson; Mark and Rich Rohrbach and Craig Buechler. Honorary pallbearers were his grandson, Bob Kraft; granddaughters: Linda Carrier, Jeanne Pesicka, Deann and JoLee Nelson, Lori Blinder, Patti Buechler and all his relatives and friends. Ushers were grandsons: Alan Nelson and Jami Rohrbach. Organist was Willis Kiesz of Long Lake. A duet was sung by Lloyd and Beverly Bender of Long Lake. THE BOWDLE PIONEER May 7, 1992 EZRA HAEGER The funeral for Ezra Haeger, age 80 was held at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home in Spokane, WA. Burial followed at Riverside Memorial Park. Mr. Haeger was born in North Dakota and lived in Reardan and Spokane from 1949 until moving to Oakdale, CA in 1983. He retired from the Washington Water Power Co. in 1974. He married Elizabeth Lorenz in Java on Nov. 1, 1932. Survivors include his wife; one son, Virgil Haeger of Oakdale, CA; one daughter, Betty Christensen of Flint, MI; three grandchildren; one great-granddaughter and a niece, Mrs. Elmer (Martha) Schmierer of Bowdle. THE BOWDLE PIONEER May 21, 1992 BENJAMIN BERG Benjamin (Ben) Berg, age 88 of Ipswich, died at the Ipswich Colonial Manor May 10, 1992. Religious service in paper. Benjamin (Ben) Berg was born at LaBarsky, South Russia, August 5, 1903 to Christian and Katherine Neumiller Berg. In 1911, at the age of 8, the family moved to the United States and settled northeast of Akaska where he attended school. He became a U.S. citizen in 1938. He married Esther Wagner at Selby, June 17, 1930. They made their first home at Rockham. Work and community information in paper. No death date for her. He married Johanna Van Berkel Rodenberg at Rapid City July 24, 1976. She died Oct. 16, 1985. Survivors include one son: Gene Berg of Mesa, AZ; three daughters: Mrs. Bernice Wietgrefe of Ipswich; Mrs. Darrell (Alice Julia) Kulm of Rapid City and Mrs. Vernon (Geraldine) Filler of Quincy, WA; 19 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, both wives, one son, 10 brothers and one sister who died in infancy and were buried near Rosenfelt, South Russia. THE BOWDLE PIONEER May 21, 1992 ADELINE BADER Mrs. Ervin (Adeline) C. Bader, age 72 of Aberdeen and formerly of Roscoe, died at St. Luke's Midland Regional Medical Center May 14, 1992. Religious service information in paper. Adeline Spitzer was born Jan. 20, 1920 at rural Roscoe to John and Rosina (Kapp) Spitzer. More on personal life in paper. She married Ervin H. Duenwald, age 80 of Hoven, died May 21, 1992 at MedCenter One in Bismarck, ND. Religious services in paper. John R. Duenwald was born Aug. 31, 1911 at rural Hoven to Den Duenwald and Mary (Minnerath) Duenwald. He attended rural and parochial schools in the Hoven area. THE BOWDLE PIONEER May 28, 1992 GERHARDT BAUMAN Gerhardt Bauman, age 82 of Hosmer, died at Lake Area Hospital in Webster May 22, 1992. His funeral was May 26 at St. John Lutheran Church in Hosmer with the Rev. Bruce Falksen officiating. Burial was at Bethany Cemetery in Hosmer under the direction of Miller Funeral Home in Bowdle. Gerhardt Bauman was born at Java July 7, 1909 to Frederick and Christina (Fiechtner) Bauman. He grew up in the Java area where he attended rural school. He and his brother-in-law were partners in the Bowdle Garage. He later owned a filling station at Bowdle. He farmed for three years with his father, east of Java, prior to his marriage to Hildegarde Jakober March 8, 1936 at Hosmer. They made Hosmer their home where he owned and operated the Gable's Hardware Store for 56 years. Music and organization information in the paper. Survivors include his wife Hildegarde of Hosmer; one son: the Rev. Dr. Paul Bauman of Sheboygan, WI; one daughter: Mrs. David (Margaret) Trefz of Webster and six grandchildren. THE BOWDLE PIONEER May 28, 1992 PETE IMBERY The funeral mass for Pete Imbery, age 87 of Hosmer was May 21 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Hosmer with Father Richard Fox officiating. Burial followed at the church cemetery in Hosmer under the direction of Miller funeral Home in Bowdle. He died May 17, 1992 at the Senior Citizens Home in Hosmer. Peter Imbery was born Dec. 17, 1904 at Hosmer to Siegfred and Barbara (Striefel) Imbery. He married Frances Schoch Nov. 8, 1926 at Hosmer. They farmed until 1933 when they moved to Hosmer. Survivors include three sons: Leslie Imbery of Beecher, IL, Harlan Imbery of Isleton, CA and Louis Imbery of Crete, IL; three brothers: John Imbery and Ben Imbery, both of Aberdeen and Frank Imbery of Parkston; four sisters: Margaret Zimmerman, Badel Davis and Mary Beers, all of California and Claudia Rowlette of Aberdeen; nine grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. THE BOWDLE PIONEER May 27, 1993 CLINTON D. BLUMHARDT Clinton D. Blumhardt, age 59 of Leola, died at St. Luke's Midland Regional Medical Center May 19, 1993. A Memorial Service was held May 24 at St. James Lutheran Church at Leola with the Rev. David Wildermuth officiating. Miller-Huebl Funeral Home of Aberdeen was in charge of arrangements. Cremation was held at Riverside Cemetery Association Crematory at Fargo, ND. Clinton D. Blumhardt was born August 5, 1993 at Bowdle to Hugo and Jacobina (Weiss) Blumhardt. He grew up and attended school at Bowdle. He graduated from Bowdle High School in 1951. He married Arliss Schlepp July 14, 1953 at Bowdle. They made their home and farmed in the Bowdle area. He entered the U.S. Army in 1955 and served until his discharge in 1957. In 1958 they moved to Leola where he worked for the Soil Conservation Service. In 1975 they bought and had been operating the Hiway Cafe in Leola. He was a member of St. James Lutheran Church, the Leola Country Club, the American Legion and was a retired Leola Volunteer Fireman. He is survived by his wife, Arliss of Leola; three sons: Craig Blumhardt of Jamestown, ND; Wayde Blumhardt of Waterloo, IA; and Miles Blumhardt of Ft. Collins, CO; two daughters: Debra Peterson of Wayne, NE and Beth Blumhardt of Fargo, ND; one brother: Rodney Blumhardt of Littleton, CO; one sister: Chloe Olsen of Arvada, CO and eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents. THE BOWDLE PIONEER May 27, 1993 CHRISTINE SWEDA Christine Sweda, age 95 of Hosmer and formerly of Lewiston, MT, died May 21, 1993 at the Hosmer Senior Citizens Home. her funeral was May 25 at the Tolstoy United Methodist Church with the Rev. Al Schmierer officiating. Burial followed at the German Zion Congregational Cemetery at Tolstoy under the direction of the Miller Funeral Home of Bowdle. Christine Lippert was born Oct. 17, 1897 at Odessa, South Russia to Elizabeth (Jakober) and Jacob Lippert. she moved with her family to America when she was 1 1/2 years old. They farmed near Onaka. She grew up and attended school in that area and recalled many farm labor days. She married Fred Trefz at Tolstoy in 1919. They made their home in Tolstoy. Later she moved to Bowdle and then to Hosmer. She later moved to Aberdeen where she worked for Gerharter Processing Plant. It was in Aberdeen that she met and married Sam Ackerman. They were married for three years when he was killed in a car accident. In 1949 she moved to Lewiston, MT. She married Andrew Sweda there in 1951. This is where they made their home. He died in 1983. Christine Sweda returned to South Dakota in April 1988 and made her home at the Hosmer Senior Citizens Home. Survivors include two sons: Bill Trefz of Hawthorne, CA and Lloyd Trefz of Poway, CA; one daughter: Elenore Green of Grants Pass, OR; one brother: Edward Lippert of Aberdeen; 23 grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchilren. She was preceded in death by her parents, three husbands, two sons, two daughters and one grandson. Casket bearers were Martin Trefz and Larry Trefz of Tolstoy; Leonard Lippert of Aberdeen; Art Eisenbeisz, Jr. and Derek Eisenbeisz of Bowdle and Albert Stoecker of Hosmer. THE BOWDLE PIONEER May 27, 1993 DONNA J., TABATHA J. JAMES A. AND JOEL SWANSON The funeral for Donna Swanson, age 25; her daughter Tabatha 6; and sons James, 3 and Joel, 17 months, was Tuesday, May 25 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Hosmer. Father Richard Fox was the officiating clergy. Burial was in the church cemetery west of Hosmer with Hein Funeral Home of Ipswich in charge of the arrangements. Donna, Tabatha and James Swanson died May 21, 1993 at Hosmer. Joel Swanson died May 23, 1993 at the University of Minnesota's Variety Club Children's Hospital in Minneapolis. Donna Jean Rath was born Sept. 7, 1967 to Gary and Carolyn (Gisi) Rath at Aberdeen. In 1971 she moved with her family to Minnesota and then to Lead. She attended elementary and high school in Lead. She married Carl Swanson on March 1, 1986 at Lead. She had worked at the Dorsett Nursing Home in Spearfish and Sturgis Community Health Center. She attended Black Hills State University for two years. In March 1993 she and her three children moved to Hosmer, where she managed the Legion Club. She was planning to attend northern State University in Aberdeen in the fall of 1993. Tabatha Swanson was born Sept. 3, 1986 at Rapid City. She attended kindergarten at Edmunds Central Hosmer Attendance Center. James Aaron Swanson was born May 16, 1990 at Rapid City. Joel Aaron Swanson was born Dec. 1, 1991 at Spearfish. Survivors include Donna Swanson's parents of Hosmer; one brother: Bruce Rath of Lead; three sisters: Mrs. David (Julie) Dittus of Fairmont, ND; Mrs. Roger (Peggy) Gant of Lead; and Mrs. Ray (Sheryl) Weisbrod of Novato, CA; and her maternal grandmother, Caroline Gisi of Hosmer. She was preceded in death by one brother, her paternal grandparents and her maternal grandfather. THE BOWDLE PIONEER June 17, 1993 TED C. SANDMEIER Theodore C. Sandmeier, age 78 of Aberdeen and formerly of Bowdle, died June 7, 1993 at St. Luke's Midland Regional Medical Center at Aberdeen. His funeral was June 11 at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bowdle with the Rev. Steven Handorf officiating. Burial followed at the church cemetery in Bowdle under the direction of Miller-Huebl Funeral Home of Aberdeen and Miller Funeral Home of Bowdle. Theodore C. Sandmeier was born May 18, 1915 in Logan County near Lehr, ND to Karl and Sophia (Wahl) Martel and was later adopted by Christ and Maria (Schick) Sandmeier. He grew up and attended rural school north of Bowdle. He farmed northwest of Bowdle. He married Mary Huft Oct. 28, 1937 at Bowdle. He continued to farm and from 1980 to 1984 he worked at Steve's Amoco in Bowdle. He enjoyed flying, hunting, fishing and camping. He was a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bowdle where he ushered and was a choir member. He was also a former township clerk. Survivors include his wife, Mary of Aberdeen' three sons: Emil Sandmeier and wife, Gladys of Bismarck, ND; Roland Sandmeier and wife, Sharon of Roscoe; and LeRoy Sandmeier and wife, Betty of Java; three daughters: Mrs. Ted (Kathleen "Kathy") Nipp of Aberdeen; Darlene Sandmeier of Minneapolis, MN; and Mrs. Rocky (Arlene) Schmitt of Redfield; one brother: Gus Martel of Bismarck, ND and two half-brothers: Charles Martel of Lloyd Minister, Saskatchewan, Canada and John Martel of WhiteCourt, Alberta Canada; one sister: Amelia Leberman of Lodi, CA and four half-sisters: Ruth Naeth of Prince George, British Columbia, Canada; Rose Basseotto, Calgary, Alberta, Canada; Esther Randall of Evansberg, Alberta, Canada and Edna Martel of North Battleford, Saskatchewan, Canada; 16 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Banik, age 83 of Tolstoy, died June 7, 1993 at Holy Infant Hospital at Hoven. His funeral was June 10 at Tolstoy United Methodist Church with the Rev. Orland Sloat officiating. Burial followed at German Zion Congregational Cemetery at Tolstoy with Miller Funeral Home of Bowdle in charge of arrangements. David G. Banik was born Sept. 29, 1909, at Bowdle to Gottlieb and Fredia (Wolff) Banik. He grew up and attended school in the Tolstoy area. After school he worked for his uncle in the Tolstoy Creamery. He married Edna Heiser, Feb. 16, 1930 at Tolstoy. In 1955 they purchased the elevator from D. G. Hottman and established Banik & son Elevator which he owned and operated until his retirement in 1986. During that time he also owned the Tolstoy Grocery store for three years. He continued to live in Tolstoy the remainder of his life. He was a member of Tolstoy United Methodist Church where he served as secretary for many years. He was chairman of the Tolstoy Town Board for many years. He also belonged tot he Tolstoy ABC Club and was a 30-year member of the Sully Buttes Telephone Company Board. Survivors include his wife of Tolstoy; one son: Kenneth L. Banik of Honolulu, HI; one brother: Arnold Banik of Aberdeen; two sisters: Mrs. Arlene Heckman of Watertown and Mrs. Ella Wallli of Spokane, WA; five grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, one sister and one son. Interment was at Fort Snelling National Cemetery at Minneapolis, MN with Gearty-Delmore Park Funeral Chapel of St. Louis Park, MN, in charge of arrangement. She was born June 13, 1925, at Lowry, SD, and died May 27, 1993 at Minneapolis, MN. Survivors include her husband, Hubert W. Seurer; son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Lynn Seurer; granddaughter, Rachel Seurer; brother Harvey Knecht; sister Elvina Simon and Lucille Weisgram and nieces and nephews. THE BOWDLE PIONEER June 17, 1993 VIRGINIA VOLLER Mrs. Harold (Virginia) Voller, age 64, of Bowdle, died Sunday, June 13, at St. Luke's Midland Regional Medical Center in Aberdeen. Her funeral will be Thursday, June 17 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Bowdle with Pastor Mindy Ehrke officiating. Burial will follow in St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery at Bowdle under the direction of Miller Funeral Home of Bowdle. Visitation will be at the funeral home in Bowdle Wednesday from noon until 9 p.m. and one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday. A complete obituary will be published later. THE BOWDLE PIONEER June 17, 1993 FRITZ CLEMENT The funeral for Fritz Clement, age 92 of Selby, retired editor and publisher of the Selby Record, Java Herald and the Cam-Wal Beam, was June 10 at the United Methodist Church in Selby with the Rev. Randy Jellison-Knock officiating. Burial followed in Selby Memorial Gardens Cemetery with Masonic Graveside Rites by Mobridge Lodge No. 164 A.F. & A.M. Miller Funeral Home of Bowdle was in charge of arrangements. Mr. Clement died June 5, 1993 at his home in Selby. Fritz Clement was born Jan. 29, 1901, at Napoleon, OH to Carl F. and Katherine (Maurer) Clement. When he was a child, the family moved to South Dakota and settled at Java. He attended school and graduated from high school there. He attended South Dakota State College at Brookings. In 1922, when his father died, he left college to take over the operation of the Java Herald which he converted from a handset weekly to a more modern hot metal line-casting machine almost immediately. In addition to his newspaper duties, he was also a South Dakota Tax Auditor. He was married to Ida Krause at Java Feb. 21, 1926 and they lived at Java until 1945 when he purchased the Selby Record and moved his home and business operation to Selby. When their son, Bruce, joined he and his wife in the business in 1950, they expanded their operation and constructed a new building in 1960. Mrs. Clement died Jan. 13, 1982 and he sold the newspaper and printing company Jan. 1, 1984, and retired from active publishing. Burial followed at the church cemetery in Bowdle under the direction of the Miller Funeral Home of Bowdle. She died June 13, 1993 at St. Luke's Midland Regional Medical Center in Aberdeen. Virginia M. Haux was born July 15, 1928 about seven 1/2 miles northwest of Java to Henry and Emma (Pleinis) Haux. She was baptized Nov. 11, 1928 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Java and confirmed there in July 1942. She attended school in Selby and graduated with the Selby High School class of 1947. She then lived with her parents northwest of Java and helped with housework and babysat for several families. She married Harold A. Voller October 1, 1950 at Bowdle. For a month they made their home with his parents eight miles northwest of Bowdle and then his parents moved to Bowdle. Harold and Virginia remained on the farm until 1976 when they moved to Bowdle. Harold farmed one more year from town. Virginia worked at the Bowdle Nursing Home until her health started failing. She also worked at the Rev. Martin Bieber Public Library in Bowdle for several years. She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Bowdle. She had served as treasurer and president of the Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of American (WELCA) and also was treasurer of the Bowdle American Legion Auxiliary Unit. She is survived by her husband of Bowdle; two brothers: Ervin H. Haux of Selby and Elmer H. Haux of Shaunavon, Saskatchewan, Canada; two sisters: Mrs. Phillip (Leona) Huft of Roscoe and Mrs. Phillip (Estella) Bast of Flushing, NY. She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister. Huber, age 72 of Hoven, died June 17,1993, at his home. Mass of Christian Burial was June 21 at St. Anthony's Catholic church at Hoven with Fr. William Osborn officiating. Burial followed at St. Anthony's Catholic Cemetery at Hoven with Military Graveside rites by the John J. Peters American Legion Post #149. Raymond C. Huber was born Aug. 31, 1920 at Hoven to John C. and Barbara (Koehner) Huber. He attended St. Bernard's School at Hoven through the eighth grade. He then attended auto mechanic school at Hoven High School. From 1935 to 1941 he worked on the John Klocker farm west of Hoven. He was inducted in the U.S. Army July 15, 1942. For 11 month of his enlistment he served in the European Theater in the 95th Infantry Division. Hew was awarded the Bronze Star and the Silver Star. He was honorably discharged Oct. 22, 1945. Following his discharge he went into construction and retired from Brenner Construction at Hoven in 1981. He spent the remainder of his life in Hoven. He was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church at Hoven and the Hoven Senior Citizens. He was a member of the John J. Peters American Legion Post #159 at Hoven and the Gettysburg V.F.W. He was also a member of the 95th Infantry Division Association. He was an avid Chicago Cubs fan, enjoyed doing crosswords and playing pinochle. He is survived by two brothers: Leo P. Huber of Avenal, CA and Chuck Huber of Sioux Falls; one sister Mrs. Edwin (Alice) Blumhardt of Gettysburg and many nieces and nephews. Charles Ernest Berndt was born at Aberdeen to Ernest Henry and Alice (Spencer) Berndt June 10, 1929. He grew up in Aberdeen and attended school there. He graduated from Central High School with the Class of 1947. He began working for Northwestern Bell Telephone after high school. He was drafted in 1951 and spent two years in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He returned to Aberdeen and continued working with Northwestern Bell. He married Margie L. Erbe April 8, 1953 at Aberdeen and made their home there. He retired from Northwestern Bell in 1976 after 30 years with the company. They continued to make Aberdeen their home. He had been a resident of the Aberdeen Living Center since November of 1991. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Aberdeen, a lifetime member of V.F.W. He was very active with Boys Scouts and the Pheasant Council for 10 years. He loved hunting. He is survived by his wife of Aberdeen; five sons: Steven C. Berndt of Glasgow, MT; Richard A. Berndt of Virginia Beach, VA; Ronald D. Berndt of Jamestown and Scott W. Berndt and Kenneth L. Christina Schilling was born May 2, 1904 to John and Rose (Kessler) Schilling at Bowdle. She grew up on a farm near Hosmer. She married Edward Kaseman Oct. 24, 1922, at the home of her parents. After their marriage the couple farmed 16 miles southwest of Wishek, ND, until 1060 when they moved into Wishek. She was a member of St. Luke Lutheran Church in Wishek. She enjoyed quilting and crocheting. About four years ago she became a resident of the Wishek Retirement and Nursing Home. (Hoffer) and Jacob V. Voegele. She attended country schools and graduated from Hosmer High School in 1951. She then taught country school around Hosmer for one year. She married Albinus J. Thomas August 22, 1952 at Fairbanks, AK. Following his discharge in 1954 they moved back to the home farm northeast of Bowdle. This is where she lived the remainder of her life. She was a member of St. Augustine's Catholic Church of Bowdle. Survivors include her husband of Bowdle; two sons: Jeffrey K. Thomas of San Diego Navel Base and Darryl K. They lived in O'Neill, NE, and later moved to Winner. They moved to Mission in 1970 and then to Rapid City a year later. In 1989 she moved to Bowdle for two years, then lived in Spearfish for a year. She recently returned to Bowdle as her health failed. Her main hobby was embroidering. She is survived by two sons: Donald J. Lineback of Sturgis and Kevin L. Marie Charlotte Peterson was born on the homestead in Smiley Township, Pennington county, MN, March 19, 1910, to Oscar J. and Emma (Skaug) Peterson. she was baptized and confirmed at St. Pauli Lutheran Church, rural St. Hilaire, MN. She attended rural school, later graduating from Lincoln High School in 1927. She received her teacher's training in Thief River Falls, MN and taught at School District #221. She was united in marriage to Gustaf Gustafson Sept. 15, 1932 at Glasgow, MT. The couple returned to Smiley Township where they farmed. He died July 28, 1982. She was residing in Browns Valley, MN, at the time of her death. She was very active in church work her entire life. (Lillibridge) Simon. She attended St. Anthony's Parochial School and was currently attending Hoven Public Schools, where she was active in track, chorus, and participated in several plays. She was also student manager of the Hoven girls basketball team and an eighth grade cheerleader. She was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church where she was a member of the Children's Choir, and attended C.C.D. (Confraternity of Christian Doctrine), the Gettysburg Dance Club, Hoven Gymnastics and was a past member of the Prairie Pals 4-H Club. THE BOWDLE PIONEER Aug. 12, 1993 EDNA C. ALDINGER Edna C. Aldinger, age 73, died Sunday, Aug. 8, 1993 at the Aberdeen Living Center. Her funeral was Aug. 11 at Zion Lutheran Church in Aberdeen with the Rev. Dennis Hansen officiating. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 12, at the Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis under the direction of Miller-Huebl Funeral Home of Aberdeen. Edna C. Aldinger was born Jan. 14, 1920 at Bowdle to John J. and Magdelena (Bossert) Buechler. She attended rural Yellowstone Country School near Bowdle and completed the eighth grade. She then moved to Rapid City. During World War II, she worked in the sugar refinery in California and also at the Ward Hotel in Aberdeen. She married Arthur M. Aldinger on March 11, 1948 at Aberdeen. They lived in Rapid City, Mobridge and Aberdeen. When living in Rapid City, she worked at Anchors and the Green Stamp Store, and while living in Aberdeen, she worked at Gossards and K-Mart. Her husband died Jan. 22, 1972. After her retirement she did volunteer work at the hospital, nursing homes and church. She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church at Aberdeen where she was involved in many activities. She was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, Women's Relief Corps, the Moose Lodge, the American Legion Auxiliary and was active in the Retired Senior Volunteer Program. Survivors include one nephew: Harvey Leidholt of Bowdle; one niece: Mrs. Leonard (Geraldine) Winchester of Aberdeen; several great nieces and nephews and one great-great niece. THE BOWDLE PIONEER Oct. 7, 1993 GILBERT QUAST Gilbert A. Quast, age 78 of Menno, died Tuesday, Sept. 21, 1993 at Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls. His funeral was Sept. 24, at the Grace Lutheran Church in Menno with Pastor Leon Schulz officiating. Interment was at the Menno Cemetery with Aisenbrey-Kostel Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Gilbert A. Quast, son of Christian F. and Emelia (Heckenlaible) Quast, was born Nov. 30, 1914 at the family farm southeast of Menno. He was baptized Jan. 17, 1915, and confirmed June 16, 1929, in Grace Lutheran Church of Menno. He was united in marriage on Dec.. 19, 1943, to Gertrude Johnle at Grace Lutheran Church by Rev. Bishop. this union was blessed with one daughter, Susan. After graduating from Menno High School and Nettleton Business College in Sioux Falls, Gilbert Quast was associated with the Menno State Bank for 36 years. He was a director for the Menno rural telephone Company for 37 years and served as clerk of the Menno Independent School District for 24 years. He was also clerk of the Menno Livestock Auction for many years. He was a ember of the Grace Lutheran Church Building Committee and participated in other community activities until his retirement in 1978. Survivors include his wife of Menno; daughter, Susan and husband, Milt Kogan of Los Angeles, CA; grandchildren: Jamie, Millay, Gavin and Tadie; one sister, Idella and husband, Walter Herrboldt of Menno; one sister-in-law, Irene Quast of Menno; one brother-in-law, Fred Johnle and wife, Evelyn of Aberdeen; two sisters-in-law: Bertha Johnle of Roscoe and Olga (Johnle) Senger and husband, Mike of Bowdle; and a host of nieces, nephews and god-children. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Raymond. THE BOWDLE PIONEER Oct. 7, 1993 HAROLD J. YODER Harold J. Yoder, age 73 of rural Aberdeen, died Friday, Oct. 1, 1993 at St. Luke's Midland Regional Medical Center. His funeral was held Oct. 6, at Miller-Huebl Funeral Home with the Rev. Gerald Rife, Jr. officiating. Burial followed at Sunset Memorial Gardens with Miller-Huebl funeral home of Aberdeen in charge of arrangements. Harold James Yoder, the son of Amos C. and Mary Iva (Byler) Yoder, was born at Littlefield, TX on Dec. 12, 1919. When he was a child the family moved to Morris, Manitoba, Canada and he started school there. In 1925 they moved to the Aberdeen area where he attended school. His parents eventually settled on a farm in Mercier Township. He married Lorraine Violet Caldwell on May 16, 1942 at Aberdeen. They lived on a farm until 1947, when they moved to Aberdeen. while living in Aberdeen, he continued to farm and ran a gas station with his brother-in-law, Alfred Caldwell until 1949. He also remodeled homes in the city of Aberdeen and did general repair work on numerous farms and he worked for Farmers Union until he purchased a farm in 1957. He was a dairy farmer until he retired in 1978, and sold the farm to his son, Robert. They continued to live on that farm until 1989, and have continued to make their home in the country until the present time. Mr. Yoder has been an ASCS Committeeman, a member of the Mercier Township Board, and the James Valley Pioneer Threshing Association. He restored Model T automobiles and antique farm equipment, and enjoyed bowling, fishing, hunting, and horseshoe pitching, as well as farm sales and good conversation. He is survived by his wife of Aberdeen; two sons: Robert H. Yoder of Aberdeen and Ronald J. Yoder of Lynn, MA; two daughters: Mrs. Bryan (LaRae) Syhre of Aberdeen and Mrs. Bruce (Gail) Briesemeister of Rapid City; one brother: Raymond A. Yoder of Buffalo, MN; one sitter: Mrs. Mary Evalyn Cook of Woodstock, IL, and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, LeRoy. Burial was at Zion Lutheran Cemetery at Ashley, ND, under the direction of Miller-Huebl Funeral Home of Aberdeen. Emma Trautman, the daughter of Jacob and Eva (Zoller) Trautman, was born at Zeeland, ND, on May 2, 1091. She attended school in that area and worked on the family farm when she was young. She married Fred E. Merkel at Zeeland on Nov. 25, 1919. They farmed north of Eureka until 1946, when they retired from farming and moved to Ashley, ND, where her husband was an auctioneer and cattle buyer. Mr. Merkel died on May 11, 1955 and she continued to live at Ashley. In May 1960 she was married to Emil Spiry at Aberdeen. They lived in Bowdle. In 1982 she moved to Aberdeen and lived at the Homestead until January, 1987, when she became a resident of the Aberdeen Living Center. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, the Zion Lutheran Church women, and a past member of the Bowdle Area Senior Citizens. She is survived by two sons and daughters-on-law.: George F. and Martha Merkel of Huron and James E. and Stella Merkel of Aberdeen; one daughter: Mrs. Herb (Mary Jane) Oster of Marysville, WA; one daughter-in-law: Gertrude Merkel of Monticello, IL; 13 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband, her second husband, one son, one daughter, three brothers, eight sisters and two grandchildren. THE BOWDLE PIONEER Oct. 28, 1993 HENRY DICKHAUT Henry Dickhaut, age 83 of Brandon and formerly of Tolstoy, died Monday, Oct. 18, 1993, at McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls. His funeral was Oct. 1, at the Tolstoy United Methodist Church with the Rev. Orland Sloat officiating. Burial followed at the German Zion Congregational Cemetery at Tolstoy under the direction of Miller Funeral Home of Bowdle. Henry Dickhaut was born Nov. 4, 1909 at Odessa, Russia, to John and Katherine (Dickhaut) Dickhaut. When he was 9 months old, he moved with his family to America, first settling at Lesterville. In 1922 he moved with his family to Madison township in Edmunds County. In 1929 he moved with his parents to a farm southwest of Tolstoy. He married Evelyn Wolff June 13, 1934, at the home of her parents near Onaka. They lived and farmed in the Onaka and Tolstoy area. In 1955 they moved into Tolstoy and he worked for 17 years at Banik Elevator and also was janitor at the Tolstoy Town Hall. Following his retirement he helped on the farms of Kenny Stephan and Larry Trefz until his health failed in 1989. He and his wife moved to Brandon July 31, 1992 to be near family. He was a member of the Tolstoy United Methodist Church where he served as Sunday School treasurer for 30 years. He also was a member of the Church Men's Club. He belonged to the Tolstoy ABC Community Club from its beginning and helped with many projects. He was also a 4-H leader for five years. He loved gardening and his main interest in life was spending time with his family. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn of Brandon; three sons: Donald Dickhaut and wife, Delores of Denver, CO; Jerry Dickhaut and wife, Judy of Casper, WY; and Rich Dickhaut of LaQuinta, CA; four daughters: Mrs. Charles (Bette) Niles of Fresno, CA; Karen Kurkowski of Omaha, NE; Mrs. Lyle (Beverly) Pfeifle of Brandon; and Mrs. Don (Alyce) Sutton of Fresno, CA; one sister: Mrs. Albert (Rose) Bertsch of Aberdeen; 19 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. (Sparky) Stoecker, age 78 of Hosmer, died Thursday, Oct. 21, 1993 at Medcenter One at Mandan, ND. His funeral was Oct. 25, at St. John Lutheran Church in Hosmer with Pastor Bruce Falksen officiating. (Sparky) Stoecker was born Nov. 23, 1914 at Hosmer to Gottlieb and Katherina (Trefz) Stoecker. He attended school in Hosmer, graduating from Hosmer High School with the Class of 1933. Following graduation he worked at the Hosmer Service Station for a number of years. He then clerked at the Hosmer Grocery Store for several years. In the early 1940s he established Stoecker Jewelry at Hosmer. In the later 40s he added electrical supplies to is stock. He married Ida Fischer at Leola April 3, 1954. He continued to own and operate his own business in Hosmer until Aug. 23, 1993 when he became hospitalized and was eventually diagnosed with a brain tumor. He was a lifelong and faithful member of St. John Lutheran Church of Hosmer where he served on numerous committees and was also a Sunday School teacher. He was a member of the Hosmer Civic Club and served as treasurer for a number of years. he was also a member of the Hosmer Senior Center where he held several terms as president, including the present. His work was also his hobby. He especially enjoyed working with jewelry. Survivors include two brothers: Dewald Stoecker of Albuquerque, NM; and Albert Stoecker of Hosmer; three sisters: Mrs. Rose Haerter of Hosmer; Mrs. Matilda Eisenbeisz of Fallon, NV and Mrs. Martha Bongfeldt of Dallas, TX. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of Sept. 23, 1990 and one brother. Schley was born Oct 25, 1928 to Edwin and Edna (Nolden) Schley at Stratford. He attended school in the area, graduating from Stratford High School with the Class of 1946. He then worked on the family farm. He married Esther M. Helgeson Sept. 24, 1948, at Aberdeen. they lived on the family farm until 1961 when they moved to Selby. He drove Eddy's Bread Truck route until he became involved with Amoco Oil and became a Jobber dealer, establishing Del's Amoco in 1964. He remained active in the business the remainder of his life. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church at Selby. He was a former Selby City Council member and had been a member of Lake Hiddenwood Sportsman's Club. He was a member of the Selby Commercial Club and served on the Board of South Dakota Petroleum Marketers. His hobbies included fishing, camping, and bowling. He is survived by his wife of Selby; two sons: Danny Schley of St. Peters, MO and Doyle Schley of Selby; two daughters: Ellen Renner and Estelle Schley of Aberdeen; two sisters: Eugenia Schley and Alberta Huff of St. Charles, MO and six grandchildren. THE BOWDLE PIONEER Nov. 11, 1993 ERVIN BOLLINGER Ervin (Erv) Bollinger, age 60 of Webster and formerly of Bowdle, died Tuesday, Nov. 2, 1993, at the Lake Area Hospital in Webster. His funeral was Friday, Nov. 5, at the Webster United Methodist Church with the Rev.. Bruce Gray officiating. Burial was Friday afternoon at the Bowdle City Cemetery in Bowdle with the Rev. Orland Sloat of Bowdle officiating. Ervin Robert Bollinger was born July 25, 1933 at Bowdle to Fred and Kathryn (Merkel) Bollinger. He attended school in Bowdle and graduated from Bowdle High School with the Class of 1951. He then worked for two years at the Bowdle Creamery. He entered the U.S. Army in 1953 where he served in Germany. He married Shirley Elaine Stotz on Feb. 18, 1954, at Bowdle. when he was honorably discharged in 1955, the family moved to Denver, CO, where he worked for Carlson-Frink Creamery. Later they moved to Bowdle where he was employed at Bowdle State Bank. In 1966 they moved to Webster, where he was employed at Security Bank and Trust until 1989, when he retired for health reasons. He became a resident of Bethesda Home at Webster in April, 1992. He was a member of the Webster United Methodist Church, Webster Kiwanis Club, and the American Legion. He was an avid golfer, hunter and fisherman and a Webster Bearcat Booster. He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter; one sister, and two brothers. Adam Thomas was born July 1, 1910 northeast of Bowdle to August and Katherine (Senger) Thomas. He attended rural school through the eighth grade northeast of Bowdle. He then farmed with his parents. He married Jennie Malsom on May 21, 1935 at Hillsview. They farmed with his parents until 1937 when they purchased a farm northeast of Bowdle and lived there until 1977 when they retired and moved into Bowdle. He remained in Bowdle the remainder of his life. He was a member of St. Augustine's Catholic Church in Bowdle. He was a board member of Rural Bowdle School District 9 1/2 for 12 years. He also served as a director on the Bowdle Equity Elevator Board and was also on the Bowdle Township Board. His main hobby was his family. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. Survivors include his wife of Bowdle; three sons: Donald D. Thomas, Joseph J. Thomas and Norbert N. Thomas, all of Bowdle; five daughters: Mrs. Bernice M. (Ray) Mohr of Hosmer; Mrs. Vivian K. THE BOWDLE PIONEER Nov. 11, 1993 MILTON J. GROSS Milton J. Gross, age 77, of Bowdle, died Saturday, Nov. 6, 1993, at the Bowdle Hospital. His funeral was Tuesday, Nov. 9, at the Evangel United Methodist Church in Bowdle with the Rev. Victor Gross officiating. Burial followed at the Bowdle City Cemetery under the direction of Miller Funeral Home of Bowdle. Milton J. Gross was born Dec. 19, 1915 at Bowdle to John A. and Barbara (Stahlecker) Gross. He attended country school south of Bowdle and then Bowdle High School. In 1936 he attended mechanical school at Kansas City, MO. Following mechanical school he moved back home and worked at the Ford Garage in Bowdle for one year. He married Mary Hopfinger on Nov. 26, 1939 at Bowdle. They moved to a farm five miles south and two miles west of Bowdle. They farmed there until retiring in 1975 when they moved to Bowdle. although retired, he helped at the Ford Garage in Bowdle for a short time. He was a faithful member of the Tolstoy Wesleyan Church where he taught Sunday School and sang in the choir. He was also a member of the Bowdle Senior Citizens. He and his wife were members of the Port Susan Camping Club in Marysville, WA. For the last 15 years they camped out in Washington twice a year. He also enjoyed playing accordion and often played at church. He is survived by his wife of Bowdle; three sons: Harverd M. Gross of Edmonds, WA; Duane R. Gross of Hammon, WI and Larry D. Elizabeth Kosters, the daughter of George and Maria (Theunissen) Kosters, was born on July 16, 1916 at Java and she attended rural school in the area. She married Ladis Raba October 29, 1934, at Selby. They farmed in the Selby-Java area until 1985, when they retired and moved to Aberdeen. She was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church and its Alter Society at Selby. THE BOWDLE PIONEER Dec. 16, 1993 EMIL BROCKEL Emil Brockel, age 80 of Mobridge, died Friday, Dec. 10, 1993, at his daughter's home southwest of Selby. His funeral was Wednesday, Dec. 15, at the Selby United Methodist Church with Pastor Randy Jellison-Knock and Pastor Sandra Jellison-Knock officiating. Burial followed at Selby Memorial Gardens Cemetery with Miller Funeral Home of Bowdle in charge of the arrangement. Emil Brockel was born at rural Campbell County, Jan. 16, 1913, to John and Frederika (Roesler) Brockel Sr. He attended country school in Campbell County. He married Clara Berg April 28, 1934 at Selby. They farmed in rural Walworth County until 1945. Then they owned the Brockel Hotel & Cafe in Bowdle until moving to Selby in 1949 where he was the Standard Oil bulk fuel manager. He was then employed as a parts man for Stulken Implement and Thorstenson Implement, both in Selby. After that he worked at Holzworth's in Mobridge and at Mobridge Iron Works before he started in the insurance business with Fritz Simons in Selby. Later he had his own agency in Selby until selling it to Don Marin in 1977. He continued to sell hail insurance for the Marin Agency for a few years after retiring. He and his wife had made their home in Selby until moving to Mobridge in 1961. He was active in the Selby United Methodist Church and later the Mobridge United Methodist Church. He sang in the choir and in the cantatas, taught Sunday School and confirmation classes and counseled MYF groups for many years. He also served as an usher and was active in the Methodist Men's groups. He was a member of the Selby Masonic Lodge and the Mobridge Senior Center. He enjoyed reading and watching baseball, but especially enjoyed working with and being around people, which he did most of his life. He is survived by his two daughter: Mrs. Verne (Marcella) Zabel and Mrs. Dale (Shirlee) Burnette of Selby; three brothers: Henry Brockel of Mobridge; Elmer Brockel of rural Selby; and Leo Brockel of Mound City; three sisters: Alma Nusz of rural Woodland, CA; Ella Bossert of Paradise, CA; and Rose Brockel of Glasgow, MT; eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. he was preceded in death by his parents, his wife on Dec. 9, 1988, two sisters and four brothers. Olson, age 101 of Bowdle, died Saturday, Dec. 4, 1993 at the Bowdle Nursing Home. His funeral was Friday, Dec. 10, at the Evangel United Methodist Church in Bowdle with the Rev. Orland Sloat officiating. Burial followed at the Bowdle City Cemetery with Military Graveside Rites by the Bowdle American Legion Post 264. Oscar P. Olson was born July 18, 1892 at Vienna (SD) to Paul and Helene (Hanson) Olson. During his early childhood he moved with his family from Vienna to Sisseton. He recalled they loaded their belongings onto a hayrack and the four-day trip to the new home 11 miles northwest of Sisseton began. It was slow because the livestock had to be driven by someone on foot. He received an eighth grade education. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I, serving nine months in France. After his discharged he worked as a contractor and builder in the Aberdeen area until 1931. He married Gertrude Goettling on Jan. 23, 1926 at Aberdeen. In 1931 they moved to a farm south of Bowdle and in 1940 they moved into Bowdle. Mr. Olson continued to work as a contractor and builder until his retirement. He was a civic-minded person, serving as commander of the Bowdle American Legion Post 264 in 1957-1958. He also served as alderman on the Bowdle City Council. He was very instrumental in getting the Bowdle Hospital and Nursing Home started. He was also a longtime member of the Bowdle Volunteer Fire Department. He helped renovate the building that houses the Bowdle Senior Citizens Center serving on the Executive Board and Building Committee. He was a member of the Evangel United Methodist Church at Bowdle. His hobbies included gardening, hunting and fishing. Survivors include one son: Gaylord G. Olson of Princeton, NJ; one daughter: Mrs. Julius (Vangie) Schilling of Prescott Valley, AZ; one sister: Agnes Johnson of Sisseton; seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife on Aug. 17, 1986, one daughter, one brother and six sisters. THE BOWDLE PIONEER Dec. 16, 1993 EDGAR F. PIETZKE Edgar F. Pietzke, age 78 of Lodi, CA died Wednesday, Dec. 1, 1993 at home following a brief illness. A native of Bowdle, Mr. Pietzke settled in Lodi in 1939. He was a self-employed truck driver for more than 40 ears and had also driven for T&T Trucking Company and Claude C. Woods over the years. He was a member of the Emanuel Lutheran Church. He enjoyed gardening, reading, bike riding and walking. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Gertrude Pietzke of Lodi, CA; two sons: Brian Pietzke of Plymouth, CA and Jerry Pietzke of Lodi, CA; a daughter: Marilyn Pietzke of Lodi, CA; a sister: Elinore Myers of Huntington Beach, CA; and two grandchildren. Hoff, age 85 of Aberdeen, died Thursday, March 24, 1994 at the Bethesda Home in Aberdeen. Funeral services were held Monday, March 28, at the Fist Presbyterian Church, Aberdeen with the Rev. Bill Anderson officiating. Burial followed in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Aberdeen, under the direction of Miller-Huebl Funeral Home of Aberdeen. Barbara Bertha Benz was born Dec. 6, 1908 in Long Lake to John and Christina (Brandner) Bentz. She grew up and attended rural school in the Danzig, N.D., area. She married Emil M. Hoff on Jan. 12, 1928 in Eureka. They made their home on the Hoff homestead and farmed there until 1951. Together and they owned and operated restaurants in Eureka and Bowdle known as Hoff's Cafe. In 1958 they moved to Aberdeen where Mr. Hoff was a contractor. He died April 29, 1988 at Aberdeen and Barbara Hoff continued to make Aberdeen her home. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Aberdeen. She is survived by four daughters: Priscilla Pfeifle of Aberdeen; Salonia Wendt of Largo, Fla..; Katherine Undlin of Las Vegas, Nev. and Shirley Bucholz of Gillette, Wyo.; two brothers: Edmund Bentz of Ashley, N.D. and ElRoy Bentz of San Jose, Cal.; five sisters: Emma Mohr of Bylas, Az.; Ida Horning of Hawthorne, CA; Edna Mattax of W. The 23-year-old woman's body was found in a freezer in Arizona last week after she'd been missing for three years. The Newport Beach woman disappeared in June of 1991. Her battered and frozen body was found July 13, inside a freezer housed in a rental truck in Prescott, AZ. A memorial service will be held Saturday in California, and her funeral is tentatively set for July 28 in Herreid. Survivors include her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Huber of Newport Beach, CA, and her grandmother, Mrs. Edward Huber of Mobridge. Seurer, age 72 of St. Louis Park, MN, died Sept. 6, 1994 at Abbott-Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis, MN. Service information in the paper. Hubert W. Seurer was born April 20, 1922, in Hoven to Charles and Eva (Kaiser) Seurer. He married the former Elsie Knecht on Sept. 12, 1951, in Hoven. They moved to Minneapolis, MN, in 1956. She preceded him in death on May 27, 1993. (Tuffy) Herman, age 75, of Aberdeen, died Sept. 20, 1994 at St. Luke's Midland Regional Medical Center at Aberdeen of acute leukemia. Smith American Legion Post #24. Alois Anthony (Tuffy) Herman was born to Joseph and Gertrude (Kaiser) Herman on Feb. 10, 1919, on his parent's homestead northeast of Hoven. He grew up and attended rural school southwest of Bowdle. He was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps at Columbia for several ears. he worked as a farm laborer, cattle truck driver, and a bus driver as a young man. In October, 1941, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving on the U.S.S. Hambleton for over four years. On Feb. 12, 1946 her married Edna Buechler of Bowdle. They farmed near the Richmond area for several years. They moved to the Westport area, farming there for 36 years. They retired in 1987 and moved to Aberdeen where they were residents at the time of his death. Church and organizational information in paper. THE BOWDLE PIONEER October 27, 1994 THEODORE BIEBER Funeral services were held recently for Theodore J. (Ted) Bieber of Elk Grove, CA, who died Oct. 4, 1994, at the age of 70. Pastor Darrell Deuel of St. Peter's Church officiated at the ceremony which was held at the Lodi Funeral Home. Interment was in Lodi Memorial Cemetery. Mr. Bieber was born and grew up in Bowdle. BOWDLE PIONEER Jan. 12, 1995 ANTHONY HEILMAN A 27-year-old Roscoe man died Monday (Jan. 9) afternoon as a result of an allergy attack on his parents' farm in Edmunds County. Anthony (Tony) Heilman, a life-long asthma sufferer, had been working in a grain bin. Heilman felt the attack coming and returned to the family house telling his father, Albert, who was ready to take him to the hospital. Funeral arrangements are pending with Hein Funeral Home of Ipswich. BOWDLE PIONEER Jan. 26, 1995 BERTHA M. GRISMER Bertha M. Grismer of Bowdle died at Missouri River Medical center, Fort Benton, MT, at the age of 75 on Jan. 12, 1995. Her funeral was Jan. 17, at St. Mary Margaret Catholic church in Big Sandy, MT with Benton Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Bertha M. Hochstetter, age 50 of Aberdeen, died Monday, March 6, 1994 at St. Luke's Midland regional Medical Center, Aberdeen. His funeral was Friday at Good Shepherd Lutheran church, Aberdeen with the Rev. Roger Noer officiating. Burial followed at Riverside Memorial Park, Aberdeen, with Miller-Huebl Funeral Home, Aberdeen, in charge of arrangements. Gene Edward Hochstetter was born on Dec. 31, 1944 at Hoven to Herbert and Twila (Davis) Hochstetter . The family lived in Java where he started school and graduated from Java High School with the class of 1962. He worked in the Java area for farmers. He married Della Diedtrich at Selby on Aug. 29, 1965. They made their home in Aberdeen. He married Linda Flocchini at Aberdeen on July 30, 1982. He worked for the J. C. Penney company for 29 years as a stock room supervisor where he worked until the time of his death. Survivors include his mother, Twila Hochstetter of Java; his wife, Linda K. Hochstetter of Aberdeen, two sons: Michael G. Hochstetter and wife, Kathy of Aberdeen and Robert F. Flocchini III of Rapid City; three daughters: Mrs. Patrick (Michele) Hanson and Monica Hochstetter, both of Aberdeen; and Angelena Flocchini of Britton; one brother, Thomas Hochstetter of Los Vegas, NV; two grandchildren; and nephews and nieces. THE BOWDLE PIONEER MAR. 16, 1995 CONRAD (C.B.) MENZIA Conrad (C.B.) Menzia, age 85 of Roscoe, died at the Bowdle Hospital on Saturday, March 11, 1995. The Mass of Christian Burial was Tuesday, March 14, at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church at Roscoe with Fr. Edward Burian officiating. Conrad (C.B.) Menzia, the son of Martin and Elizabeth (Volk) Menzia, was born at Roscoe on May 12, 1909. He attended school there and worked on area farms and then he worked for the Milwaukee Railroad until 1933. THE BOWDLE PIONEER MAR. 16, 1995 ELMER BARTH Elmer Norman Barth, age 74 of Lodi, CA and formerly of Bowdle, died March 2, 1995 in a local convalescent hospital following a short illness. He was born Sept. 23, 1920 at Hosmer. Mr. Barth married Melita Voegel in South Dakota on Nov. 2, 1941. They lived in Washington for two years and later returned to Bowdle where he lived for 23 years, before moving to Lodi, CA in 1967. Military and religious information in paper. THE BOWDLE PIONEER MAR. 23, 1995 DUANE GUNDERSON Funeral services were held Friday, March 17, at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Highmore for Duane Richard (Mick) Gunderson. Burial was in the Highmore City Cemetery. Duane Richard Gunderson was born Oct. 11, 1931 at Highmore to Charles and Esther (Campbell) Gunderson and died March 13, 1995 at Sioux Valley Hospital, Sioux Falls, at the age of 63 years, five months, and two days. He was raised on the family farm north of Highmore, later taking it over from his parents. He was united in marriage to Donna Ruark in Highmore on June 10, 1955. To this union six children were born. She was born Oct. 20, 1915 in Bowdle, the daughter of George and Wilhelmina (Brandel) Wentz. she attended rural school in the Bowdle area. She married Albert Doerr on July 17, 1934 at Bowdle where they farmed. They moved to Wisconsin in 1949, moving to Red Wing, MN, in 1954. She worked at various places in Red Wing including Busy Bee Laundry. She enjoyed crocheting and crafts. Survivors include her husband of Red Wing, MN; two daughters, Pat Johnson of Hager City, WI, and Lavon and James Enevold of Bay City, WI; three sons: Orville and Angie Doerr of Hastings, MN; James and Judy Doerr of Frontenac, MN; and Lester and Laura Doerr of Hager City, WI; 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Dewald, Jr., age 15 of Bayard, NM, entered into eternal rest. The memorial Mass was celebrated on Friday, March 3, 1995 at the church with the Rev. Paulus Kao presiding. The young boy had been missing for 15 months before his body was found in a shallow grave near his school. Foul play is suspected and the incident remains under investigation. Michael J. Reinhold (Reinie) Herman was born at rural Lowry, Walworth County on April 13, 1904 to Henry and Nettie (Miller) Herman. He attended country school near Lowry. She (Eva Buechler) was born Feb. 19, 1910 in Walworth County (to Fredrich and Elizabeth (Stotz) Buechler) and died June 6, 1995 at Coos Bay, OR. Mrs. Fletcher had resided had resided in the Coos Bay community for 44 years. She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church and enjoyed sewing, crafts, and traveling. THE BOWDLE PIONEER June 22, 1995 JOHN J. HUBER John J. Huber, age 95 of Mobridge, died June 14, 1995 at the Bowdle Nursing Home. His funeral was Friday at Miller Funeral Home in Bowdle with Pastor Mindy Ehrke officiating. Burial followed at the Bowdle City Cemetery under the direction of Miller Funeral Home. John J. Huber was born Nov. 23, 1899 at Russia to Jacob and Fredricka Huber. At the age of three he moved with his family to America, settling in the Bowdle area. He did farm work in the Bowdle area and also worked at a diary farm near Mobridge. He moved to Mobridge and began working for the railroad until severe arthritis forced him to retire. He remained at Mobridge until he became a resident of the Bowdle Nursing Home Feb. 11, 1987. This is where he lived the rest of his life. John Huber enjoyed going for long walks and playing cards. He married Lydia Maier Jan. 20, 1929 at Bowdle. Adaline Wiedmeier was born July 29, 1907 in Yankton County 18 miles north of Yankton to Martin and Paulina (Mantek) Wiedmeier. She grew up in the Menno area. In 1922 she and her family moved to Loyalton where they lived for a short time. In 1931 they moved to Roscoe where she operated the Trail Cafe in Roscoe for 14 years. She then moved to Aberdeen where she worked for the Sherman Hotel. She enjoyed gardening, raising flowers, and crocheting. She was a very active member of Our Savior Lutheran Church, Aberdeen. THE BOWDLE PIONEER July 27, 1995 ALMA (KNECHT) HAGELE Alma Hagele, age 88, and longtime resident of Sunnyside, WA, died July 14, 1994. Karst was born Oct. 10, 1917 at Hoven to Joseph and Elizabeth (Edrich) Karst. this is where he grew up and attended school. He lived on the family farm until he was 11 years old, when the family moved to Hoven. He enjoyed playing center field for the Hoven baseball team. He worked for various farmers and in the Civilian Conservation Corps in the Black Hills in 1939. He married Eleanor M. Baus at Hoven on Sept. 29, 1941. They farmed in the Wilmot and Peever area for three years. In 1944 they moved to a farm near Bowdle until 1977 when they retired and moved to Hoven. He enjoyed gardening, baseball, fishing, playing pool at the Senior Center, spending time with his family and especially fishing with his grandchildren. He was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Hoven; Catholic Order of Foresters, Hoven; Hoven Senior Center; Director of the Bowdle Equity Exchange; Board Member of Odessa Township; and School Board Member of Odessa Township School. Reeder, age 43, was killed in a car accident. He was married to Cloris Schumacher, daughter of Beulah and the late Norman Schumacher. Cloris Reeder gave birth to a baby girl on July 28, 1995. Reuben Clifford Brandlee was born June 26, 1909 in Union township, Day County, near Pierpont to Edward and Eline (Enstad) Brandlee. He attended rural school near Pierpont and remained on the family farm. He married Evangeline Stolsmark on Jan. 29, 1938 at Aberdeen. They farmed on the family homestead near Pierpont. Bieber, age 88 of Mobridge, died Sept. 4, 1995, at the Mobridge Regional Hospital. His funeral was Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mobridge with Pastor E. Douglas Heskin and Intern Jill Jackson officiating. Burial was Saturday afternoon at St. Paul Lutheran Church Cemetery at Java under the direction of Miller Funeral Home of Bowdle Gustave W. Bieber was born to Rosina (Hausauer) and Friedrich Bieber on March 1, 1907, at rural Eureka in McPherson County. As a young boy he moved with his family to a farm seven miles south of Java. He attended rural school at West Ryan School through the third grade. As the oldest son, he saw very few school days since he was needed on the farm. He married Marie M. Schreter at Zion Lutheran Church in Lowry on Easter Monday, April 1, 1929. the ceremony was held early in the week so as not to interfere with the beginning of the spring field work. The newlyweds settled on a farm 11 miles south of Java. They stayed there until 1974 when they moved to Mobridge. After the move Gust continued to help on the farm for several years. He lived the remainder of his life in Mobridge. He was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church at Java for 67 years. He was very active in building the new church which was completed in 1960. Following his move to Mobridge, he became an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church. He was a member of Mobridge Garden Club; Mobridge Moose Lodge; and Mobridge Senior Center where he worked at the Nutrition site until November 1994. He also served on t he West Ryan Rural School Board for six years. Survivors include his wife of Mobridge; three daughters: Mrs. Lorraine Biel of Java; Mrs. Adrian (Shirley) Kast of Haynes, N.D.; and Mrs. Ray (Pam) Reiss of Java; two brothers: Art F. Edward Roesch was born on May 1, 1909 at rural Roscoe to Freiderich and Rosina (Treftz) Roesch. He attended rural school and began working on his parents farm near Rose. He married Irene Ulmer on Dec. 25, 1939 at Hosmer. following their marriage they continued to live on the farm where he farmed throughout his lifetime until his health failed and they moved to Aberdeen. Melvin Moser, the son of Jacob and Christina Baer Moser, was born Oct. 29, 1919 at Eureka. He received his education in Bowdle and graduated from Bowdle High School. He then attended Business College in Chillicothe, MO. On Nov. 26, 1941 he married Beryl Tate in Spencer, IA. Following their marriage, he joined the Air Force and fought during World War II. Althea Zimmer, age 75 of Bowdle, died Sunday, Oct. 8, 1995 at her home. Her funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, October, 12, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Bowdle, with Pastor Mindy Ehrke officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery at Bowdle. Althea Guthmiller was born at Hosmer to Christina (Hoff) and Fred Guthmiller on Aug. 11, 1920. She attended Sangamon Township School east of Hosmer through the eighth grade. She then worked on her parents farm. She married David M. Zimmer on Aug. 24, 1941 at the Reformed Church in Hosmer. They lived in Hosmer for two years. In 1943 they settled on a farm southwest of Bowdle. In 1967 they moved to Bowdle where Dave was employed as janitor at the school. Althea Zimmer did babysitting and later worked as a cook at different cafes in Bowdle. she cooked at the Bowdle Nursing Home for 25 years until ill health forced her retirement in the spring of 1994. Since that time she fought a courageous and inspiring battle with cancer. She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Bowdle, the Women of the Evangelical Church in America (WELCA) and the Esther Circle. She was especially proud of earning her General Education Development (GED) Certificate in 1977. She enjoyed gardening, growing flowers, sewing, cooking and spending time with her grandchildren. People in Bowdle will remember her as a good neighbor. Burial followed at hte church cemetery under the direction of Miller Funeral Home of Bowdle. Magdeline Nies was born to Frederick (Dollinger) and Jacob J. Nies on April 23, 1900 at rural Bowdle, Edmunds County. She attended school in the area. she attended nurses's training at Loma Linda (CA) Sanitarium and Hospital and received her R. N. degree in 1924. She worked at White emorial Hospital in Los Angeles, CA, and later in the Glendale Sanitarium and Hospital in Glendale,CA, until her retirement. She later returned to South Dakota, and in May 1991 she became a resident of the Bowdle Nursing Home. Magdeline Nies was a member of the Bowdle Seventh-day Adventist Church. She loved her chosen career of nursing. Surviving her are two nieces: Alma Binder of Bowdle and Betty J. Dennis of White Salmon, WA; and two nephews: Melvin C. Binder of Colfas, WA and Clifford Haffner of Vancouver, WQA. She was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters, and three brothers. Johannsen was born to Anni (Holtorf) and Herman Johannsen on May 4, 1936 seven miles south of Tolstoy. He was baptized at his home in August, 1936 and confirmed at St. James Lutheran Church, Tolstoy, in 1950. He attended rural grade school in Fairview Township south of Tolstoy. He attended high school at Northwest Lutheran Academy in Mobridge, graduating with the Class of 1954. He then enrolled at Dr. Martin Luther College at New Ulm, MN, graduating in 1958 with a degree in elementary education. He married Charlotte Kahler at Colome in June, 1958. THE BOWDLE PIONEER OCT. 26, 1995 HAZEL BUCKENBERGER Hazel Marie Buckenberger, age 80, a homemaker who lived in Pebble Beach, CA, the past 21 years, died Oct. 6, 1995 in the Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula shortly after an angioplasty operation. She was born in Java on April 2, 1915. She lived in Fresno, CA, for 20 years before she and her husband, Ben moved to Pebble Beach. They owned and managed clothing stores throughout California. Olivia Leona Hildegarth Fix was born to Adam and Magdelna (Reiner) Schlepp on Nov. 25, 1913 in New Leipzig, ND. She was five years old when her mother died during a flu epidemic. In 1919 her father married Eugenia Dubs and the family moved to Bowdle where she attended grade school. She was confirmed in the Lutheran Faith. She entered high school in Bowdle and graduated in 1932. She married Conrad Fix Feb. 11, 1933 at St. Augustine's Catholic Church in Bowdle. She worked at the Bowdle Livestock Pavilion for many years. Three children were born to the couple while they lived in Bowdle. The 1948 they moved to Spokane, WA. In 1949 they returned to South Dakota and lived in Aberdeen for 10 years. She was manager of the Fanny Farmer Candy Store for many years. In 1959 they moved to Minneapolis, MN. She became a beautician and operated a salon in her home for many years. In 1992 she entered a nursing home at New Hope, MN, due to ill health. Her husband died in 1994. Survivors include her one son: Wayne Fix of Minnesota; two daughters: Joanne Manley of Rapid City and Kay Uhler of Eden Prairie, MN; three brothers: Elmer Schlepp of Java; Victor Schlepp and Oswald Schlepp of Bowdle; six sisters: Elsie Well of Lang Beach, CA; Dorothea Imbery of Isleton, CA; Ramona Schlepp, Bowdle Nursing Home; LaVaughn Stotz and Karen Weiszhaar of Bowdle and Arliss Blumhardt of Leola; her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her brother Roland. THE BOWDLE PIONEER NOV. 2, 1995 REVEREND LEO J. KUHN Father Leo J. Kuhn, pastor of Sacred Heart Parish in Carrington, ND, died Oct. 19, 1995 at a Bismarck medical center. He had served the Carrington area since being appointed pastor in 1984. Leo Kuhn was born in Napoleon, ND, on July 20, 1931, the last child of John G. and Caroline Kuhn, homesteaders who farmed for many years northwest of Napoleon. He attended rural schools, starting in the Kroeber School District and later moving into high school at Napoleon. Upon graduation from Napoleon High School in 1949 he decided to attend Crosier Seminary in Onamia, MN. He later transferred to the St. Paul Seminary in St. Paul, MN, where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree. He then went on to complete his Master of Arts in Religious Education at Loyola University in Chicago. IL. He was ordained a Roman Catholic priest by Bishop Leo F. Dworschak at St. Phillip Neri Church in Napoleon June 5, 1958. Not copied were all the positions he held. Read the obituary for complete information. Clara M. Hein was born Oct. 13, 1914 at Selby to Artha (DenOtter) and Charles G. Hein. She attended school in Selby and then enrolled at Northern in Aberdeen. She taught six years in rural schools in Campbell and Walworth counties. She married Reinhold (Sam) Miller May 27, 1940 at Selby. They lived in Eugene, OR for three years and then in 1943 returned to the Miller family farm at Selby. In 1946 they bought a farm at Barnard and while living there she did substitute teaching. In 1954 they returned to Selby. She taught at the rural school for one year and then joined Mobridge School System faculty. Her husband died Oct. 26, 1959. Burial followed at St. Anthony's Catholic Section of Selby Memorial Gardens under the direction of Miller Funeral Home. Katherine T. Kosters was born to Maria (Theunissen) and Gerard Kosters Oct. 19, 1918 south of Java near Spring Lake. She attended East and West Spring Valley Schools through eighth grade. By age 11, her parents had died and she lived with her sister, Wilhelmina and husband, Gottlieb Schuh at the home which is now Aunt Minnie's Attic. She worked at her sister's home and for neighbors housekeeping and babysitting. She married Martin Raba Jan. 5, 1938 at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Selby. First they lived at the Henry Hein farm in the Spring Valley District. Eight years later they moved to a farm owned by Andrew Raba, known as the John Carlson farm southeast of Selby. THE BOWDLE PIONEER Dec. 14, 1995 HAROLD NIES Harold Edward Nies, age 73, of Winner and formerly of Java and Bowdle, died Dec. 6, 1995 at Winner Regional Healthcare Center. Religious services detailed in paper. Harold Edward Nies was born June 8, 1922 to Peter and Ethel (Ryan) Nies in Draper. He was raised on a farm south of Java. He attended rural school and graduated from Java High School in 1940. He was in the Civilian Conservation Corps and the U.S. Navy. He married Helen Witlock on June 10, 1949 at Java. They lived in the Java area until 1957 when they bought a farm northwest of Bowdle. In 1994 they moved to Winner. Church and club information in paper. THE BOWDLE PIONEER Dec. 14, 1995 MARIE WEISHAAR Marie Weishaar, age 81 of Lakewood, CO and formerly of Aberdeen and Hosmer, died Dec. 5, 1995 at her home. Religious service in paper. Marie Kirschenmann was born Nov. 2, 1914 at Hosmer to John and Christina (Kurle) Kirschenmann. She married Edwin Weishaar on Jan. 12, 1934 at Hosmer. She was a member of the Lakewood United Church of Christ and the Association of Retarded Children. Magdalena Schlecht, age 95 of Bowdle, died Dec. 14, 1995 at the Bowdle Nursing Home. Her funeral was Tuesday afternoon at St. Paul Lutheran Church. More on religious services in paper. Magdalena Buechler was born to Magdalena (Kirscheman) and John Buechler Nov. 25, 1990 at rural Bowdle, Walworth County. She was baptized by Rev. Ottesberg on Dec. 2, 1900 at the Neuglueckstal Lutheran Church northwest of Bowdle. she attended country school through the third grade northwest of Bowdle. Her father died when she was a young girl and her mother and brother, Daniel remained on the farm. She married Henry Schlecht on March 11, 1920 at the St. Paul Lutheran Church Parsonage in Bowdle with Rev. Hanselman officiating. They lived and farmed in Walworth County until retiring in 1959 and moving into Bowdle. He died April 29, 1963 and she continued to live in Bowdle with her daughter, Lydia. She moved to the Bowdle Nursing Home Oct. 12, 1995. Religious and club information in paper. THE BOWDLE PIONEER Dec. 28, 1995 HENRY SPINDLER Mass of Christian burial for Henry Spindler, age 85 of Hoven, was Tuesday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church of Hoven with Rev. William Osborn officiating. He died Friday, Dec. 22, 1995 at Holy Infant Hospital in Hoven. Henry Spindler was born March 22, 1910, to Henry and Minnie (Nieman) Spindler at Olivet. He attended grade school and high school at Olivet, graduating in 1928. He attended Southern Normal at Springfield, graduating with a degree in elementary education in 1932. His brother, Elmer, was living in Hoven and he moved there following graduation. He taught country school northeast of Hoven for 8 years. He married Cecilia M. Mertes on Oct. 14, 1940, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Hoven. They farmed several years with her parents and then on their own. In 1949 and 1950 he worked as assistant postmaster at Hoven. They then returned to farming, renting various farms. In 1956 they purchased a farm northeast of Hoven. He lived and farmed there until retiring and moving to Hoven in 1981.
