From Mr. G.C. Kober of this city, who visited the scene of the recent tragedy in Jerauld county, the following additional particulars are received concerning the shooting of Peter Robey by Ben Solomon. Mr. Kober was present at the coroner's inquest and got his facts first hand: The two men had been working together on the Harris farm and occupied a shanty together. Robey was the cook, and according to Solomon's statement, refused to get up the right sort of a breakfast on the day of the shooting. A quarrel ensued and Robey made for Solomon with a piece of scantling. The latter turned to run out of the shanty, when Robey grabbed a butcher knife and went after him. Solomon turned, drew his revolver and shot Robey through the body. The latter followed up his and assault and Solomon shot him twice more, once through thehead and the last time in the arm. This finished Robey, and Solomon gave himself up. An inquest was held Friday by Coroner Gatlin at which the above facts were elicited and a verdict rendered in accordance therewith. Solomon was the only witness called, as the two men were entirely by themselves at the time of the tragedy, and of course only his side of the story is obtainable. He is a young man of twenty-three of twenty-four years whose father lives in Hastings, Nebraska. He is given a bad reputation in the neighborhood where the killing occurred, and is said to have killed a man or two before in affrays. His preliminary examination was held Saturday and he was bound over for murder in the first degree. This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/sdfiles/ File size: 2.1 Kb
